Intermittent overhead display - revisited

Hi all,

thought I had sussed, and cured, the BCM problem on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD Ltd Auto, but it seems not.

I now carry a small 13mm ring spanner in the car with which to disconnect the battery and reset the BCM.

The fault is not consistent though. Sometimes she'll go 3 or 4 days without dropping out, other times I will reset it of an evening and it drops out the next morning.

One thing I have noticed though, when you switch on the ignition you get 5 beeps as the various indicator lights go out, start the engine and you get another 5 beeps, sometimes! Sometimes it does 4, and occasionally only 1. It is almost always when it does only 1 beep that the BCM malfunctions shortly (within 20 yards of home) afterwards.

I've also noticed that, even when all appears to be O.K., giving her a bit of wellie can cause it to drop out. I don't think it's down to a battery/charging problem as I've checked the battery on load (9.6V on start-up) and charging (14.4V).

Does anybody know how many beeps I should get before, and after, starting the engine? What do these beeps signify?

Next time it only does 1 beep I'm going to try switching off and re-starting it to see if it makes any difference.

Chrysler sucks, agricultural mechanics controlled by over-sophisticated unreliable electronics. Does anybody know where I can get a good old Model 'T', preferably in black?

Cheers

Tony N

Re: Intermittent overhead display - revisited

Just checked it on my jeep. 5 Beeps when switching on ignition and after start with safetey belt not fastened. Only 1 beep when switching on ignition and after start with safetey belt fastened.
The jeepmanual is not that clear for which reasons the beep will sound, but a few of them are:
1) Safety belt
2) Headlamp on and driver door open
3) Key in ignition and driver door open
4) Due to a request of the instrument cluster or EVIC

So my gues for the 5 beeps is: 4 times for the seatbelt and 1 for the "check gauges" indicator.

The EVIC will beep if your screenwash is low, i think it does it when a service is due too, as Frank says in point 4.

I'd hazard a guess if the unit itself is faulty, it could just beep happily away to itself. Have you removed it to check the wiring? Just a guess.
