Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

Very difficult to isolate, but these exhaust manifold are noted for cracking ,check it carefully.....second it may be valve train related ...removal of valve cover is suggested and inspect valve train ...third oil filter housing appears to be leaking just an o ring ,but its a pita with out the proper tool to remove ..i made something up to make it easy to do....

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

I just take to my mechanic, and he say put on step on brake and put on drive and give it a little gas, then the noise back, he say it the lifter, he dont know if these lifter can be adjustable or not. but he definally say it the lifter need adjust.

he say i can drive like that and it wont hurt any thing. just annoying sound i have to live with. is this true ?

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

Yes, the lifters tend to tick on these jeeps, particularly when cold. My old ZJ with the 4.0 ticked all the time for the first few minutes when running. The way it was explained to me is the lifters are at the top of the engine and after sitting the oil drains off. When started cold the oil doesnt flow as well and takes extra time to push up to the lifters. Doesn't seem to have any adverse affect, I had my old 4.0 at 208,000 miles and it still ran great.

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

My buddy has a XJ w/ the 4.0L and it had lifter tick when the engine was cold. He switched from 10W30 to 5W30 to allow oil to flow to the lifters better when it was cold. Worked pretty well for him.

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

thats odd, mine would make noise at start up, and increase for a few seconds if I hit the accelerator, but then it seemed to get oil and go away. Sounds like what you are saying is it only happens when there is a load on the engine, ie actual driving. Does it happen constantly while driving or only the first few minutes? Maybe its something else driveline related like a u-joint and not coming from the engine if you hear it only when the jeep is in motion.

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

If you have a mechanics stetoscope, you could maybe easier find the location of the noise. The clack clack seems to be too strong for lifter noise. And especially when it starts making (more) noise under load. I would first use a stetoscope to try to pinpoint the source.

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

I have had a similar ticking sound for a while now but I believe it's the CMP or Camshaft position sensor because I can feel the tick with my fingers. I'm looking to get it replaced soon. Hopefully that's the problem and nothing else.

Here is a similar post about it in JU and a picture of what I am talking about:
