Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

Welcome to the garage!

For that tick noise, make sure the oil level is full, this engine takes 6 qts. If that is good try some fuel system cleaner and run an upper cylinder lubricant, like seafoam, in the oil for a few hundred miles before your next oil change.

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

I am fairly certain seafoam and similar tell you specifically not to drive with the product in the crankcase. I am sure it is like fuel and has some lubricating qualities but iirc, your not really supposed to go much off of idle while you have it in the crankcase... IF you have had great success with this I bite my tongue, but I dont see a cleaner like seafoam being something that will keep the bearings afloat.

Ticking is perfectly normal in the 4.0... actually there are alot of noises from the 4.0 that are pretty common and they still keep pluggin along, typically your looking at lifter noise but there are other posibilities.

You may have a cracked exhaust maniofold. also pretty common on the 4.0l, usually on wranglers, I dont know of differences between manifold designes if any.

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

Yes, that noise was fairly common on my old 4.0, but usually only during cold starts in winter. It should go away after a minute or so of running, when the lifters are sufficiently lubed.

Edit: The tick did not go away after using seafoam but it was quieter and did not last as long.

Straight from the seafoam website: " You can leave Sea FoamŪ in the oil indefinitely as long as the oil is clean. The addition of a high-detergent oil like Sea FoamŪ may cause the oil to become dirty faster than normal as buildup oil residue and contamination are cleaned. Check the oil at regular intervals and when it gets dirty, change it."

Seafoam is a petroleum based multi-purpose fuel/oil detergent. Adding it to your fuel tank will help clean the fuel system and injectors, adding it to your oil will help clean up any varnish or sludge from a poorly maintained vehicle. It can also be added directly to the intake system to help clean varnish and carbon build up. Search the forums here for more info on it, it is perfectly safe to use in your engine. I recommend adding it shortly before an oil change because your oil will get dirtier as it cleans your engine.

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

update : the noise really bother me, engine is quiet no tick noise at idle, but while accelation, the click noise came back, like a pen hit the table kinda noise.

while idle I rev the engine up, no noise, just while accelation on the road.

no smoke or loose oil, jeep running strong and smooth, just that pen hit the table type of noise, any help ?

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

Sounds like an exhaust manifold leak if its only under acceleration. The sound I was more familiar with only occurred at idle.

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

Could be a leak at the exhaust manifold gasket, could be a crack in the manifold itself. You would have to look at it to verify this. You would have to pull off the manifold and look at it, if there are no visible cracks put it back together with a new gasket and see if the problem goes away. I have not done this before so you would have to look it up. I highly recommend getting a haynes manual for the Jeep, they can be invaluable.

Re: Jeep 4.0 tick noise

Possibly the belt tensioner? If the bearings in it are gone, it makes a ticking sound. Mine shredded to pieces at 70mph!
