Re: jeep tranny problem! plz help!

Since you have the overland, you should have the 4.7 with 5-45RFE tranny, right?
What was the reason in the first place that the solenoid pack and all sensors ( 2 x speed sensor and 1 line pressure sensor?) where changed?
That the torque converter is not locking up, this just happened after the battery died? When the battery died, was anything special done to get the jeep working again (jumpstarting for example), or was the battery just changed right away?
And are you sure that the torque converter is not locking up?

Re: jeep tranny problem! plz help!

ok so in the begginning the battary was going bad and it was during the cold winter months. so sometimes it would start, sometimes it wouldnt. i jumped it off a couple times. just to get to work an back. and finally one night it went completly dead, i had a jump but couldnt keep it even running. next day i jumped it off. it would finally idle. so i drove it home. and then thats when the problem happen. it just wont go into overdrive. and my tranny has overdrive and 5th gear confused. so it should be overdrive/ fifth gear, my jeep thinks 5th/4th. so i took it to this shop and they replaced the stuff in the tranny to try and fix it. didnt change anything and they say they dont know how to fix it. so im going to take my jeep to a jeep dealer as soon as my warranty company gets it all straighted out with that shop that it isnt fixed.

Re: jeep tranny problem! plz help!

In your first post you where talking about no torque converter lock-up, but now about problems with overdrive. This are completely different things.
Both 4th and 5th gear are overdrive gears. If the tranny is shifting into wrong gear, it could be the transmission control module, input/output speed sensor (which where already changed as per your words), or even a TPS sensor.
Due to the fact that all this happened after your battery problems, i would lean more towards the TCM.

Re: jeep tranny problem! plz help!

Overdrive is the name for those gears, where the output speed from the transmission is higher then the input speed.
For the 5-45RFE tranny for examply, 3rd gear is direct gear= 1:1
4th gear = 0.75:1 and 5th = 0.67:1
So when overdrive is not disabled ( O/D light on instrument panel OFF), the tranny can go until 5th gear. In both 4th and 5th the torque converter can lock-up. (clutch in torque converter will be activated, to lock the torque converter input to the output, in this way preventing any slip and heat buildup and any losses due to this)
With overdrive disabled ( OD light on instrument panel ON), the transmission goes until 3rd gear and torque converter will lock.

Re: jeep tranny problem! plz help!

Don’t know if the fallowing helps…

I had my check engine light illumine. Flash code indicated that the torque converter wasn’t locking up or slipping. I reset the check engine light and went on a road trip to L.A. Driving up the Grapevine, I experienced significantly less power than usual. Just as I crested the mountain, my Trans Over Temp light illumined. I pulled off and let things cool down. I made it back home without the Trans Over Temp light illumining again.

Back home, Transmission shop dropped the tranny and discovered, yep you guessed it, torque converter was shot. Transmission shop replaced the torque converter, solenoid pack, fluid, and both filters.

As a side note, I don’t think the previous owner ever changed the ATF and filters, for the ATF was turning orange when I purchased the Jeep at 65K. Upon discovering this, I had the ATF and filters changed. No way of knowing if the lack or service lead to the torque converter’s demise or not.

Re: jeep tranny problem! plz help!

So when your tranny goes to 5th gear, overdrive is working ok. As mentioned before, 4th and 5th gear are overdrive. In both 4th and 5th gear the torque converter should lock-up finally. When you look at the rpm indicator, you can see a drop of 200-300 rpm when the torque converter locks up. It almost looks if you have an other gear.

exactly. so it goes up to fifth gear just fine. and going up hills it feels locked.
but before my rpms at 80 were 2450ish and now at 70 there 2450ish. so it just needs to lock up in ffth gear

also i found out my spedo is 5mph slow from 25mph to 70. tire size is stock.
i dont know lol
