Question Long squeeck(sp?) coming from engine bay

I noticed after a certain amount of time driving when i brake and i'll be idling and this loud sqeek coming from the engine bay almost like something up with the break pump maybe? but it sounds like if you had a full blown balloon and strected the tip to make that annoying squeeky noise. The noise doesnt happen often but everynow and then it will pop up and scare the crap out of me.... anybody else experiencing this?

Re: Long squeeck(sp?) coming from engine bay

It can be the accessory belt or tensioner. Have a look at the belt if it is not cracked or shinny on the innerside. If this looks ok, check if the belt tensioner moves freely and if its not at the end of its travel. The belt can be streched too long and the tensioner can not go further.
The sound could also come from the steering hydraulic pump, but this is normally a much lower level of sound.

Re: Long squeeck(sp?) coming from engine bay

Alternators make some weird noises when when the bearings start to go.Its hard to diagnose anything on the serpentine system cause you can't just unhook one thing and the noise echos around under there. When my Jeep was making noise me and 2 other people swore it was the ac compressor but it turned out to be the water pump after I installed the compressor.I took the compressor back and had to eat a $20 restocking fee I'd pull the belt and check all pulleys and idlers for roughness, noise, etc and go from there.

Re: Long squeeck(sp?) coming from engine bay

I got a VERY similar issue with my 2003 Grand Cherokee. It got REAL cold the other night, after the ABS had engaged during a stop, there began to be a clicking / tapping sound from the engine compartment, only at an idle, sounded like a lifter almost, but turned out to be a solenoid on the drivers inner fender well that was related to the ABS system. I dismissed it for the time, and began to drive again, as I got up to about 30 MPH, a loud squealing VERY similar to what you described started in the engine compartment, sounded to be on the passenger side of the engine. Ive been a mechanic for 15 years, but am not well versed in ABS systems. On a whim , I disconnected the solenoid that was clicking, and began to drive again..... no noise......

Hooked it back up , got to around 30 MPH again , squealing starts again, disconnected solenoid, no squeal...... so i leave the solenoid unplugged, and drive it about 30 miles to where we were riding quads for the day, only drove it a few times during the day, but the check engine light came on, no doubt due to the solenoid unplugged. Hooked it back up that night, drove the 30 miles home no issues, no issues since.......??? kinda baffled myself, is this more the type of thing you heard or am i way off base? Definately related to the ABS system.

Re: Long squeeck(sp?) coming from engine bay

2003grandcherokee, the solenoid you are talking about is that not the EVAP/purge solenoid? I also heard a light tapping sound, only at idle, which appeared to be a lifter tick. But searching around with a stetoscope, i found the EVAP/purge solenoid making the ticking sound. It only does this after warming up the engine and is normal. The PCM is sending the pulsing signal for this solenoid to function.
By the way, a great and cheap tool this stetoscope. When there is a strange noise coming from the enginebay, you can easily point out the source.

Re: Long squeeck(sp?) coming from engine bay

There is no pump for the brakes. You only use vacuum to increase the braking force. There is however a small pump in the ABS unit which will be activated once the ABS was used. It will return the fluid from a catch reservoir in the ABS unit to the brake reservoir.
But you don't have ABS light on?

Re: Long squeeck(sp?) coming from engine bay

Violant00, you say that you hear it as well when you push the brake pedal full down, but in that case the ABS should start working to prevent wheel lockup and you will feel a vibration in the brake pedal due to the anti skid valve operation.
Could it have to do with this?
