Red face My Air Conditioning is not blowing as cold as it did just a couple days ago.

Hello to the forum!

Heres the poop:
2000 WJ 4.7 V8
1) Ive only noticed the AC loosing its coldness in the last couple of weeks and especially in the last two days.
2) My refrigerant level is fine. In fact i filled it today and the gauge said it was at the top of the green (bottom of the red)...is this bad?
3) The compressor seems to be turning fine.
4) The metal tubes near the firewall (where the re-fill nipple is) are cold to the touch but they dont get all iced up like they used too. **Also, shouldn't the tubes have insulation on them? They are bare metal and look like they're corroding just a little bit.

Other things:
5) After driving with AC on then parking and turning off the engine, I walk around to the front I can hear a faint 'hissing' sound.....but its always been like that even when the AC was much colder.
6) Water drips and puddles on the ground after driving with AC on.
7) The heater is working fine.

Thoughts:
1)Is there a radiator for the AC that can get clogged and how do I blow it clear if there is?
2)If it might be the blend doors is there an easy way to check that? I've seen tutorials that involve using a saw to cut behind the glove box....I really dont want to do that
3)If the compressor is going bad how can I check for that?

Oh yeah...my question is: What do I need to do to get my arctic-blast AC back?

Thanks group!

There are two radiator type components in the AC system: the condensator (in front of the engine cooling radiator) and the evaporator ( which sits inside the HVAC housing) . The condensator can be easily checked, by just looking through the 7 jeep slots . Restricted flow here will reduce the cooling efficiency. But also a not working cooling fan could do this.
To see if the compressor works properly, you will need to hook up some manometers and check the pressures in the system.
Indeed, not well working blend door(s) could be the problem as well. How does the AC perform when the engine is still cold (and eventual mixing of the cooled air with air from the heater core will not make too much of a difference, since the coolant is still cold)
At WJJeeps.com - Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 1999-2004 you will find a procedure to calibrate the blend doors.
Water dripping on the ground during/after AC operation is normal, since moisture in the air will condensate on the cold evaporator core and accumulate in the lower side of the HVAC housing, where a drain tube takes the water towards the engine bay, where it just drips down on the ground.
Be aware that high humidity levels will bring down a lot the cooling efficiency of the evaporator, since part of the cooling energy is used to condensate the moisture out of the air and not to cool down the air itself.

>>>Be aware that high humidity levels will bring down a lot the cooling efficiency...

I'm hoping that this is the cause. I'm in SoCal (hopefully not for long) and its been very humid here the last few days. In fact an amazing thing has been going on since yesterday. Water has been falling from the sky. Crazy....

Thanks for the tips!!

easy way to check if it is due to a blend door problem: get a pinch clamp and pinch off one of the heater hoses. That will stop the flow of coolant thru the heater core so the blend door position won't matter.

^ good way to isolate an issue

Also the expansion valve could be getting stuck

Having a gauge that reads in the green or red, yellow is not accurate at all. Have it serviced at a reputable shop. They will put in dye so at. Later time if leak exists it will show via dye.

Example:

My ac clutch failed so i went ahead and replaced the compressor complete, new expansion valve, and new dryer as its needed. I vacuumed for 30m and sat at -20" ( i have a basic vacuum pump for r134a at home) thats not sufficient but got me enough to be able to get some freon in the system to get cold air until i got it to work (robinair) to put it on a machine and run it to -30" then i had the machine put in the appropriate amount of freon /oil. World of difference being ounces off. That can be a cool ac vs ice cold.
