Mysterious Antifreeze Leak

On my '99 WJ, there is antifreeze down the passenger side of the radiator. I can't locate a crack on the radiator or the upper hose. Is a crack in the plastic radiator tank a common problem in these? The only time it seems to leak is when it is warm. It leaves a good size puddle on the garage floor after pulling the WJ in and shutting it off.

I don't think it is the water pump as the only spot that it is wet is on the passenger side of the radiator and down. The antifreeze isn't blown all over the front of the engine.

Any help would be awesome.

Re: Mysterious Antifreeze Leak

More than likely there is a small crack in the plastic tank or sometimes they leak where the plastic meets the aluminum. As the coolant warms up the pressure will increase which would make it leak more. This is kind of a common problem on plastic tank/aluminum core radiators I had to replace mine for this reason.

Re: Mysterious Antifreeze Leak

Replaced mine last year as well for the same issue. There was a small crack in the plastic tank, only at the drivers side.
When you replace it, you better also replace the thermostat and radiator cap at the same time.

Re: Mysterious Antifreeze Leak

I planned on replacing the thermostat and radiator cap at the same time. I'm going to replace both the lower and upper hose as well since they both are only $30.

I forgot to mention the hoses as well. Replaced them on mine at the same time. The lower hose has a spring internally, which keeps it from colapsing when the engine cools down. The new hose (at least the one i bought) didnīt had the spring and i just swapped it over. Be carefull with the hose clamps, because they have quite some tension and when you let it go it will be launched. Some people prefer to use normal tension clamps, but i think most of them have a smaller surface and you never know how far to tighten them. I do prefer the original constant tension clamps, because they they just keep the tension right all the time. Which engine do you have?

Re: Mysterious Antifreeze Leak

I swapped the radiator, thermostat, water pump, upper hose, and lower hose today. It was a pain in the rear to get the radiator out. It took me about 3 hours to get the radiator out. Once it was out, everything went smooth and easy. I had the water pump swapped, thermostat changed, and everything put back together in 2 more hours.

There is no more leak and the temp gauge never gets to 210* like before. The heater is a lot hotter as well.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Mysterious Antifreeze Leak

It has been 3 weeks since I installed the new radiator, radiator hoses, water pump, and thermostats. Since about 2 weeks ago I have had a mysterious leak on the passenger side of the radiator again; this time worse.

I thought I had found a leak coming from the upper radiator hose. I readjusted the hose clamp and even added a second clamp to extra measure. It doesn't seem to be leaking anymore. The clamps are standard hose clamps.

I've put pressure on the radiator via a pressure tester. It will leak down about 5 PSI in about 45 minutes.

Any ideas?
