Negative Battery Cable Destroyed

Well after 6 years it was finally time to change the battery. No problem, except the neg termanal bolt was corroded. It come off, no problem. However, going back on, naturally it broke before crimping the terminal to the post. Again no big deal. However, when I flipped the terminal, the ear that the bolt goes through was about to break off!! There was virtually no material left on the underside and it was barely hanging on. So now I need a new terminal but the damm wires are taped, loomed, glued, and god knows what else. I don't even know exactly where they terminate. (I didn't look either) I didn't feel like doing all that at this point in time.

So I bought a universal terminal, crimped on two nice terminal ends to the negative leads and bolted them to the terminal. Came out good.

Question is, can I buy a factory style negative cable (with 2 leads) from anywhere besides the dealer? And where do the leads terminate? I assume one goes to the block and the other to the ECM, maybe?? Again, I didn't take the time to look.

Has anyone had this happen? I was thinking about battery washers, but I'm not real found of them, and have never used them on any other vehicles with top post terminals.

Well the "what else" is that the negative cable and positive cable is one whole wiring harness. You cannot replace one without the other.

Once I take apart the loom, the negative cable is idependent from the positive. I don't understand your comment. Unless the negative cable and positive cable are factory terminated to some junction or something, which I doubt. The cables must be independent of each other at all times, they just run together, along with a bunch of other wires. Please clarify if I'm missing something.

I can see your confusion, but when you really have a chance to look at the battery cables you will understand what I am trying to explain. I am a horrible explainer, but when I had issues with my negative cable and started looking for the negative cable replacement, all cables that Autozone, Napa, and Advanced Auto sell are the generic negative cables and they will not work for one reason or the other. You also cannot buy just the negative cable from the dealer either. The positive cable and the negative cable come as one whole wiring harness.

This $115 dollar wiring harness will replace the negative and positive battery terminals that connect to battery and the rest of the wiring goes to the starter, altenator, under the hood fuse block, a connector that is located under the battery tray. Then you have the new negative wiring that is then grounded to the fender and engine block. Like I said its a poor design, but it was the only option I found. Good luck!

WOW!!! I would have never, ever, guessed it was so convoluted like that!!! I'm glad I did my terminal trick now. Thanks for the info!! I don't think I'll be doing a factory replacement any longer after that explanation.

wow is right! my negative terminal is in the same boat as yours, and it's all taped together running in what sounds like 50 different places =[. i work at napa, and i was going to use our universal 2 lead replacement harness

Part number 728216 @ $24

it will work, but i don't want to mess up the somewhat clean look it currently has. so i'm at a bind myself. the factory harness sounds out of the question for me too.

Just do what I did with terminal ends and a universal battery terminal. Then bolt the leads to the battery terminal. It worked pretty good, but it is difficult to crimp 4ga or whatever they really are.

i don't understand what you did, pics please?

and i'm running 1200w (yes, actually 1200w) for my system... soon to be 2k+. if you are suggesting what i think you are, i don't think i'll get the needed current throughout my car as i will need.

basically, get a picture or 2 please =]

you can buy (+) and (-) terminals at Auto Zone, they have a bunch of connection options and lengths.

Here is a pic of what I did. Unfortunately I had no black electrical tape. I had 3M 35 in white, grey, red, blue, yellow, but no black!!! The most common color!! Also, when I cut the leads, I accidentally cut some strands out of one and had to re-strip it but it still worked.

Aside from the grey tape, it almost has a factory look. And I think these lugs will transmit any current needed.

The pic is attached (I think). Not real good at pics in threads yet. Do I need a photo bucket (or other) account to embed pics?

ohh i see, that is kind of what i thought you meant... but in my mind it didn't look nearly as clean. i just showed my co worker this (he's been here for 30+ years =\) and he suggested the same kind of thing, just with a bigger terminal for better current.
