New Here And Looking For Much Needed Advice

So my wife bought a 2001 Jeep Cherokee not long ago. To make a long story short there is a rod knocking, we unfortunately have a loan on it so replacing the motor is a must.
The big question is, is it a must to get the exact year jeep motor to work with the vehicles computerand fit without any changes or is there another option?
Also any good places to shop for a quality used engine? It is the 4.7 V8. Cheapest I have found is around $1,900 and usually pretty high in miles. I would greatly appreciate any info from anyone who knows for certain.

To be safe '99 to '02. $1900 is too much for a used engine. You can get a totally rebuilt one from Advance for under $3k and that was just the first place I checked. I'm sure there are better deals out there.

Appreciate the info. Someone I dont believe much of what they say said only a identical 2001 would work. So hopefully this will work.

Look in to Jasper. They are reasonable and have a pretty good warranty as well.

So could I put a engine from say a 2001 Durango or Dakota? As long as its the 4.7 liter 8 cyl 287? And still work with my exsisting computer?

That I cant say for sure but if it is JTech with the separate tcm it should work. I can't remember how my old Durango was set up but I don't remember seeing a separate tcm. That doesn't mean it wasn't there though
