Hello,

I have the above mentioned Jeep with about 79,000 miles on it and have been having an issue with noise from front diff. usually starts making the noise as you press on gas. took to mechanic and he replaced fluids. the sound is not as loud but is still there. Its not a whine or a whistle sound and is hard to describe, and feedback is appreciated.

Re: New member 99 GC limited 4.7

Welcome to the garage.
Regarding the noise, could be several things. Could be a bearing in the diff or wear on the pinion and/or ring gear. Did the shop which did the fluid change mention anything of metal particles in the fluid?
Could also be (one of) the front propeller shaft couplings (CV or U-joint) or a drive shaft CV joint. Many times the source of a certain noise is not that easy to discover, because it can propagate through the driveline. Also check the T-case fluid for level and eventual metal glinsters in the fluid.

Have you put it in neutral and slowly pressed down the gas pedal? That would at least tell you without a doubt that it's driveline noise and not engine noise.

Re: New member 99 GC limited 4.7

Thanks for the responses. I have put it in neutral and no sound, it starts when I hit accelerator and then after I let off the sounds stays for a split second. My mechanic just put additive in it the other day. He seems to be trying the little things and not be too aggresive which I appreciate but dont want to be hurting the gears by driving. This car has been babied. It was my dads and we swapped titles, ironically we both have 99 GC mine has 170,000 miles on it and his has 79000, he hardly drove it and thought it would get better use with me. Any other ideas I am open to. Thanks again for your insight.

Kevin
