new to the jeep thang and have an oil problem

So i recently bought an 01 4.7l gc. I love the truck its super comfy and has power. I'm going for the sport suv thing. But I've started noticing oil in my air intake. My air filter was soaked in it. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this?

Re: new to the jeep thang and have an oil problem

For some reason your engine is burning oil. Oil in the filter can in fact only come from the breather tube which comes from both cylinder head vents. I would start checking the PCV valve and when not changed lately, just change it. Inexpensive part. Also check if there is suction in the line going from the PCV valve to the inlet duct. The PCV valve sits in the upper part of the oil fill tube. To remove it, press it in and turn around 30 deg counter clockwise and pull it out.

Re: new to the jeep thang and have an oil problem

Eventhough a catchcan is a great thing to keep the air inlet and intake valves clean, i think that there is something wrong causing even the air filter to be dirty with oil. If the PCV valve doesn't help, it could be that there is some serious blowby from one (or more) of the pistons, causing a high airflow through the breather lines. A quick check could be done by removing the oil filler cap with the engine running and feeling if there is a lot of air coming out. Normally there isn't.
And regarding oil, there are a lot of personal preferences on the brands. I at least use 5W30 or even 0W30 synthetic oils. The later is a bit thinner when cold and lets the oil flow sooner to the bearings then the 5W30 oil. Most of the engine wear happens at startup when cold.
Both 5W30 and 0W30 are the same at operating temperatures.

Re: new to the jeep thang and have an oil problem

Well i checked the oil filler while running and didnt get any air at all coming out of it. So i guess thats a good thing right? I did notice that the hose going from the air intake and splits off to the heads has oil in it and around it. I did take the pcv valve out and it does rattle the little thing inside. I'm still going to replace it in the morning.

Re: new to the jeep thang and have an oil problem

Would it hurt to just put a breather on the tube that gos into the Air intake and not run it in the intake tube? That's where all my oils coming from
