Not starting...

I may have made a mistake, but I bought a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo that had been setting for four months. I put a battery in it and could not get it to start, or even hit. It would crank nicely and even build up oil pressure but would not start. The previous owner stated that when he tried it a week ago that it started briefly and the when he went to hit the gas it died and has not started since. What do I need to do? It has a 4.7 V8 in it. :confused::rolleyes: It is red and has a nice body and I saw no major problems like wreck damage. But I need to get it started and home.

Fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs and coils, these are all things I would check.

To run, an engine needs air, fuel, and spark. (assuming it's turning over on the starter! lol)

1. So, start with spark, has it got it?
2. Then fuel, has it got fuel upp, or is the fuel stale? (He may have said its been sitting for a few months but maybe he's understating it?)
3. Least likely to have an issue with air intake unless someone has left a rag in the intake by accident.


If you've got spark and you think you've got fuel up to the injectors (and the fuel smells ok), then I suggest getting access to the throttle butterfly by removing the intake tube and spraying some "aerostart" or "start ya bastard" in it to see if it'll kick on that.

^^^ I'm with these guys. Check plugs, fuel filter, air filter, fuel pump, etc. X2 Ben, if it's been sitting a while and depending on the conditions the fuel may have seperated. If it's been left lying for four months, I'd say it's not been all that well looked after.

If he's saying it died when he hit the gas, it could be the crankshaft position sensor, check for code p0320 on the odometer, if you get that it's definately the CKP. If you get any other codes, someone on here will be able to help further.

If you're new to Jeeps, to get the codes, turn the ignition on full, but not so that you actuallt start the engine (just light up the dash). Do this three times in fairly quick succession, on the final turn leave it on and the odometer will display the codes. If there aren't any it will just say 'done'.

Got in the Jeep and checked for codes like Stonecold told me how. I get a P0340 code, camshaft position (CMP) sensor circuit. If that means what I think it does how much trouble am I in??? Totally new motor or new timing gear, belt, chain? If the cam does not rotate in sinc with the crank does it do a lot of damage as in some foriegn cars? Thanks everyone for the help. I got a good deal on the Jeep, Maybe? :eek::confused:

It should just be a case of replacing the sensors. There shouldn't be any harm done. The sensor basically do what they say, relay the position of the camshaft/ crankshaft or whatever it may be. If left for a while it can do damage and it's generally better to get it fixed as soon as, but I wouldn't panic.

They're generally straight forward, just undo a couple of bolts, unplug the old and plug in the new. Some can be a PITA to get to though.

I worked on the Jeep today and got it started and drove it home. I will need a new engine. After I got it started I heard the loudest knocking noise ever. I checked everything over and nothing else seems to be a major deal. I looked for over two hours for the cam sensor and never did find it. When the engine is replaced I am going to make sure both the cam and crank sensors are replaced. Thanks everyone for your help.
