Occasional thump/bang at stop?

Not sure if this is a brake or transmission problem. It does not occur every time the '01 Laredo V6 stops so I don't think it can be a warped brake rotor. It seems to be in the front end and sometimes the bang is more pronounced than others. Recently had the trans. solenoid replaced and had a single odd occurance of the car shifting out of O/D on the highway with O/D indicator lit on the dash, but that hasn't happened again.

Want to head off a potentially bigger issue so any insight greatly appreciated.

Re: Occasional thump/bang at stop?

I would first check for any play in the front end drivetrain and suspension components. Check the front driveshaft, ujoints, ball joints, tie rod ends, shock mounts, springs, even brake mounts.

Or if the transmission is shifting oddly it could be the throttle position sensor.

In my experience warped brake rotors usually cause a vibration when stepping on the pedal, not a thump or bang.

Good luck!

Re: Occasional thump/bang at stop?

I had something similar in my rear brakes and found that the brake pad retaining spring was missing. I see you have an '01, which would have the TEVES calipers and they use springs to hold the pads. If you have Akebono calipers, then disregard...

And whether the retainer spring is missing/broken or not, I would upgrade to the akebono calipers anyway IMO.

Re: Occasional thump/bang at stop?

Had it in to local garage. They did a full transmission flush and found radiator blocked. I'm hoping that heat/pressure build-up is what caused the bang. The tranny otherwise looked good. Brakes were in good shape.

Re: Occasional thump/bang at stop?

Radiator blocked??
If the radiator was blocked, you would get a too high fluid temp and most probably the temp high light would come on. But hopefully your problem is solved.
