Oil leak, but from where

My 03 WJ v8 has begun leaking from somewhere near the rear seal, but I haven't been able to see exactly where yet. I'm waiting for a warmer day to crawl under and see where the dye I added shows up.

When I noticed it, i saw some oil coming down the back of the oil pan, but not an appreciable amount between the two surfaces that look like they mate the engine to the transmission. Does this mean it's more likely an oil pan gasket?

I noticed it first, mostly, because the oil coming down the oil pan is dripping directly on one of the converters, making a stink.

Is there a chance this is something easy, like a pan gasket, or is it most likely the rear main seal? If so, how much is that going to set me back?

Re: Oil leak, but from where

Welcome to the garage. I had a leak like that on my WJ where the oil was dripping on top of one of the Converters. On mine it came from s leaking transmission oil pump seal. Yours can be different though.

Re: Oil leak, but from where

Could be any previously mentioned, I have seen on NUMEROUS 4.7l engines worn valve stem seals leaking oil into the exhaust and leaking out of the exhaust manifold gaskets.

Re: Oil leak, but from where

bottom line you need to completely clean the engine before you attempt to locate it
