P1764

My 2004 GC Special Edition 123k just started acting up. Randomly the check engine light comes on and the trans doesn't downshift to 1st at a stop. Accelerates slowly from 2nd and doesn't shift to 3rd until 40mph. Just as randomly, the engine light goes out and the trans operates normally. Superchip DTC showed P1764 Governor Pressure Sensor Low. Good thing I photographed the screenshot because I can't get it to read a DTC when the engine light comes on and it won't clear the check engine light either. I've kept her regularly maintained and I just hope I can make it back to my trusted mechanic (125 miles away) before she balks on me.

Sooo. I've seen comments on P1762 and P1763 codes but what about P1764. What exactly do I need to get to fix her? It saves time and money when I can take the car and the part to my mechanic. He's a doll!

Suggestions?

Re: P1764

You have the 4.0 with 42RE tranny, isn´t it?
Most probably the governor pressure sensor is bad. Normally they replace this sensor, but also the governor solenoid at the same time.

Re: P1764

Yup. 4.0 with 42re tranny. I'll follow your advice and get the sensor and solenoid. Time for a fluid and filter change anyway. It's really a solid ride and the maintenance isn't anything that one would expect for a seasoned vehicle. One repair beats car payments any day. I'm worried that Jeep has priced me out of the market and I've been driving one since 92. I digress. Thanks!

Re: P1764

When you look for the sensor and solenoid, compare the price with "RE" Solenoid Master Kit 00 Up They sell OEM parts for very competitive prices. They probably can help you with the filter as well.
The kit mentioned on the above mentioned site also has the overdrive and lockup solenoid set included. You could also find a kit without this last one as well, although you would be without problems for a long time with this complete kit. http://www.electricaladvantage.net/r...idkit00up.aspx

Re: P1764

That Master Kit is a good idea. I had been wondering about just getting a sensor and solenoid or getting a kit to cover all the bases. As for driving around the next couple of days until I can get to my mechanic back home, other than being annoying when it's not working properly, can it do any significant damage to the tranny? Got to drive 125 miles to my mechanic.

Re: P1764

Not that easy to say if it could cause damage or not. If there is a too low line pressure, it could be that clutches and/or bands are not applying with enough force and this could lead to slipping clutches/bands and extra wear. Also when the tranny doesn´t shift to first gear, you will put extra strain on the torque converter, which would also cause higher fluid temperatures.
Would it be mostly highway driving to your mechanic? If so, i would not drive that fast and keep the speed constant, to prevent slippage inside the tranny as much as possible.

Re: P1764

Yes. Fortunately it's all interstate driving from Jacksonville Fl to Valdosta GA. Crazy car...check engine light is out today and tranny shifted fine but after running errands in stop and go traffic, the tranny started acting up, but the check engine light never came on. I think I'll park the GC until I go to Valdosta and drive my hubby's 2012 Ram 3500 Laramie Long Horn. He also has a 2012 Wrangler...I've go an 04 GC. Hmmm. Something wrong with that picture! LOL
