Post Power steering leak....

Alright guys, here i go with another problem. Are power steering leaks comon on these jeeps? 4.7 V8. I replaced the o-ring on the resivior, it was bad, then the high pressure hose that goes from the top of the power steering pump to the hydrualic fan started leaking, so i replaced that. Now its leaking again, somewhere on the passenger side of the jeep but Im not sure where. Are there any other things that the jeep is known for having problems with leaking? Thanks for any advice...

Re: Power steering leak....

Sounds like things are wearing out, you'll have to keep an eye on things and replace as you go unless you have some friends that are real good mechanics that can look it over for ya.

Re: Power steering leak....

Power steering leaks are not that common, but after some years of duty it can happen. There is also an O´ring on the upper hydraulic hose connection, did you replace that one as well? Clean the area very well and try to find out where the leak is comming from, that would be the first step to take.

Re: Power steering leak....

Yes I had an issue with that already had have replaced that. It doesnt make sense, but for some reason it looks like it is coming from the gasket between the fitting that the lower radiator hose attaches to going into the engine. It seems like it is going to be one of those deals where you replace almost everything trying to pinpoint the leak....

Re: Power steering leak....

I had to replace the PS steering line on my WJ last year.
Note that the WJ takes specific PS fluid that even the dealers don;t always know about. It specifies that it's for use on the WJ in fine print on the bottle.
I have a couple of quarts of the PS fluid sitting in my garage. Free to anyone who wants to pickup in the Bay Area. I also have 4 gallons of Zerex GL5 in Reno. Also free to anyone who wants to pickup (WJ is gone...)

Re: Power steering leak....

Certain types of fluids can cause problems on seals and hoses, but i don't think that using mineral oil for example (synthetic should be used) would cause a leak. It could cause however problems in the power steering pump.
