Power steering pump problem

Well I changed the radiator on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4.7 everything went fine. As soon as I started it up the power steering pump whined really loud and I have no power steering, I added power steering fluid and it still whines and has very little power steering, it also seemed to leak all of the fluid I put in out. My car has never had a power steering problem before. So is there some thing I need to do bleed the system or what. My understanding is that the engine cooling fan also works off of the power steering pump. So I guess that means no cooling fan also? I did remove the whole radiator assembly, so yes I did undo the power steering hose at the fan.

Thanks for the replies in advance
Paul

Re: Power steering pump problem

Welcome to the, garage.
Where is the fluid leaking? Indeed the hydraulic cooling fan is fed by the power steering pump. The pump makes a whining noise when its low on fluid. Dont operate it for prolonged time, because it will ruin the pump.
Probably by solving the leak, you will solve your problem.
Bleeding is done by just moving the steering wheel from stop to stop around 20 times, while you keep the reservoir full. In the beginning it will form a lot of bubbles, so just shut down the engine and wait a few minutes for the foam to disappear.

Thanks for the info that did it. It still seems to have a little whine at a high rpm and it is full.

Did you use the right fluid?

Re: Power steering pump problem

Not sure I searched and searched and found many different types of fluid suggested to use. Full synthetic ATF is what I used, is that correct? Hope so!
Thanks

Re: Power steering pump problem

The manual states to not use ATF, only power steering fluid.
