Powersteering Pump and cold weather start.

I noticed this when I brought my '02 JGC Wj from Florida to Missouri. When the ambient temperature is below freezing (32F or )C), the power steering pump does something odd. When the vehicle is started cold at the stated condition the PSP makes a whining noise that dissipates in a few seconds depending on the temp., longer for colder temps and shorter the closer to 32F or 0C. It only does this when the jeep has had time to cool down to the outside temperature.

Anyone have any ideas on why this is occurring?

Normal, its bleeping cold and nothing works right when its cold. You could flush entire system and fill with fresh lube.

Re: Powersteering Pump and cold weather start.

It's just due to the cold weather

Re: Powersteering Pump and cold weather start.

With the hydraulic fans the power steering pumps do double duty on these WJ's. As long as you don't notice a lack of steering power it probably just needs a few seconds to warm up, but it could be the very beginning of its end.

My '93 Cherokee did it for years.

Re: Powersteering Pump and cold weather start.

It shouldn't be near it's end, it was replaced last May... The whine has dissipated since I changed the TPS. That got rid of the reving at start up and has dropped the RPM's down to ~650.
