I am having a problem with my 99 Grand Cherokee at the gas pump. This just started about 2 weeks ago. I have to hold the nozzle and trickle the gas into the tank, or else the pump keeps shutting off. I have tried different pumps and differnet stations, but no good. There are no codes showing up on the odometer. Also, a while back (couple of months) I ran out of gas and rolled into the station, but when I filled it up, it only took 18 gallons to fill?? HELP!! It takes me 10 minutes to fill the tank!

First thing that comes to mind is the vent is plugged. There is a vent line next to the fill line that goes to the tank so air can exit the tank as it fills with gas. If its not venting pressure will build up and the pump auto shutoff will kick in.

There is an onboard refueling vapor recovery system installed which directs the air, which has to come out of the tank during refueling, to the EVAP canister. There is a controlvalve in that line which is actuated by a float. Maybe the float is sticking in closed position, preventing the air going out of the tank. This valve is mounted on top of the tank left fwd side. Don´t know if you can access it with the tank in place.

Mine does this sometimes. I learned that if I bring the nozzle out of the fill tube by about a half inch or so, it'll fill up like normal. Seems to only happen at pumps with older nozzles.
