Re: quadra trac ll question

"Ok, I wondered why when I jacked up the front and turned one wheel the other turn in the other direction, thinking the auto hub/axle lock was stuck on, but I guess not"
The wheels turning in opposite directions just means your vehicle doesn't have a locked diff. That is normal. If it had lockers they would turn the same direction.

Re: quadra trac ll question

Ok, solved the problem......I did replace the front right and left axle thinking maybe one of the CV are going bad, but once out I quickly realized they are OK, but with 165K on them, I could not expect them to last too much longer....Once having new left right install, the clicking noise did not go away.....

So, there was only one last possibility, and that was the Transfer Case Chain.....I ordered one, pulled the unit out, and yes, very loose. Replace the chain then bingo!! It was the chain skipping and now I have full torque with no clicking noise....

The reason I thought it was coming from the front is that the TC is mounted to the Tranny and that is supported by the rubber mount. thus this noise would move forward thru the tranny and thru the front drive shaft, back into front drivetrain into frame back to me... I would not hear it coming up from below where the TC is

.

Congrats. Always a good feeling to locate the source of a problem.

Re: quadra trac ll question

Good to hear that you finally found the real problem. Is there a chain tensioner in the T-case?

Re: quadra trac ll question

No, no tensioner.....There is a short table that the chain will drag on, I suppose this is so the chain does not drag on the bottom case as I had seen in pictures of the wear that is left behind if the chain slackens too much.....

I suspect the reason there is no spring load type of tensioner is so the chain will not be taken to the point of it breaking and cause major self destruction.

BTW the skipping did not hurt the sprockets at all, I was worried of this......The sprockets have a very large crown radius on the peak of the tooth giving it a very large bearing surface and the chain has a sharp peak allowing the wear to be located more or less on the chain, about the hardness I don’t know but would think the chain is softer.

my Chain had 165K and looked to be about 1/2" longer than new one

Re: quadra trac ll question

I found this problem to be very hard to find a solution to on the internet, the thread should be changed to "clicking noise front drivetrain" for others

hi im all new to the jeep world but anyways... are you saying all jeeps with QT2 that have a tow package have vari-lock in the rear? i do believe i have the tow package and saw that QT2 jeeps have open diffs in front and rear

I'm not 100% sure that the tow package always comes with a rear Vari-Loc axle. QTII indeed normally has open diffs, otherwise it would have been a Quadra Drive. The stealer can probably help you out regarding the Vari-Loc.

Wonder if the chain is my issue why I.don't have any front assistance when I'm at a slippery boat launch

Re: quadra trac ll question

Put the T-case in 4Lo, lift 1 front wheel and turn it around. It should not be possible to turn. If it does, there is something wrong with the T-case or maybe even with the diff.
