Re: quadra trac ll question

Mine just started to bind tonite after putting a front driveshaft a week ago and fluid in the t case 3 days ago... the t case was ran completely dry for at least 1000 miles and no front drive shaft for over 22,000 Miles

Re: quadra trac ll question

sorry i forgot to say the sound is coming from the t case.

ok here it goes i traded my car straight up to this one guy for his jeep... so its my jeep now

he had it, then sold it to his girlfriends brother then they bought it back, he said he had never used the 4x4 in it.

not knowing anything about jeeps i dont know how each system worked. i saw 4 all time so i wanted to test it, so one night before i picked up my girls i tried to go up this hill. sadly to say i could not make it up the hill (back 2 wheels spun) so i was like whatever... my mom is gonna watch the girls again tomorrow night... so when i got home that night i found the "how to do" online. i went back down and put it in 4LO. very good amount of torque so i know the 4x4 system works... well a clicking noise started to happen so i paid very little mind to it. so the next night rolls around and this time the wife didnt wanna try going up the hill so i went on a dirt road and tried to spin (i did). then i put it in 4 LO (no spin). with all the torque it seemed like the 4 lo worked...

a couple of days passed by...
...
...

for some reason i wanted to look under the jeep. and found... NO FRONT DRIVE SHAFT... so all that thinking the 4x4 worked that went down the drain. within the next 2 days and $150 later i put the front drive shaft back in and the clicking continued. i... (sorry i took the dog out and the kids were crying)
and forgot what was next... anyways... oh yea i remember i did research and found out about the chain in the t case. so i put the jeep in 4LO then 4 all time then 4LO again about 3 times. then heard the grinding of the teeth catch.. the clicking continue

... skip a week

so doing research on the web i heard i might have burnt out something by the front drive shaft not being in so i priced another t case ($350)

so i got a friend from a local jeep club to check out the t case before swapping it out. so we found out the t case was DRY as DRY could be... and the front diff lubricant was low. so we put the t case fluid in and the clicking slowed up more like a click.... click.... click... it was clickclickclick

so then after a little bit of driving the clicking stopped. now there is a weird type of binding sound in the t case when i turn and go forward...when i back up there is no sound

Re: quadra trac ll question

Not easy to answer this question. The progressive coupler inside the T-case will be activated as soon as there is a speed difference in between the front and rear propeller shaft. So if for example the front tires are far more worn then the rear ones, it could be that the coupler is activated all the time, trying to make the speed front/rear equal, which will not be possible. Probably the coupler will get damaged over time. But if you ran the T-case completely dry for a while, the coupler will not function, because it needs fluid to actuate the coupler. Can imagine that bearings etc do not like the absence of fluid ( lubrication and cooling) that much and can be damaged. Its probably time to open up the T-case and see what is going on.

Eventhough the light is standard on the instrument cluster, its only in use when the jeep has Selec-Trac 4 wheel drive system. So on the Quadra-Trac II (with the 247 T-case), the light will not work.

Whatever is happening in the T-case, its probably not a good idea to continue driving like this. If the chain makes noise, its probably stretched too far. It can cause secundary damage to the T-case to such extend that repair is not possible anymore. So you now have to decide or repairing this T-case or swapping it with one from the scrapyard.
