rad fan runs constantly

Just picked up '04 CG, radiator fan runs constantly and I expect it will burn out.
Seller said it was fan relay burnt closed, check engine is on. Sound like it's definately relay or sumptin else?
Side note, back in about '79 or 1980 I had a flatbed ( bed must've rotted off) Jeep J-200 Kaiser pickup that would climb ice covered trees (if I let it), brought it to my brother's house for some minor repairs and sister-in-law had it towed away along w/ a comanchee and a great International Scout (all three were mine) Then she divorced my bro and moved south, that is after she sold/gave away all his tools. Nice girl.
Oh, Hi, I'm Bob

Re: rad fan runs constantly

Welcome to the garage Bob.
So your jeep is a 4.0 with the electric cooling fan. Does your jeep have the two separate hi and low speed relays in the PDC? Older models have one solid state relay which is mounted under the right headlight.
And yes, its most of the time the relay which is faulty, but also many times it got faulty due to the cooling fan which draws too much current.

Re: rad fan runs constantly

No, sorry, it's a 4.7 and no there's only open space in the designated spot in the pdc. I've researched the location and was just concerned that there may be another cause. ( the seller may have been guessing). Thanks

Re: rad fan runs constantly

I'll check the load from the fan, any idea what it should draw?

Re: rad fan runs constantly

So having the 4.7 means that it will not draw any current. On the 4.7 a hydraulic cooling fan is used which always rotates when the engine is on. It idles with 500 rpm until the coolant temperature goes over a certain limit. Then the PCM will ramp up the speed until the temperature is under control.
Did you check the fault code set? Ignition switch off/run three times and leave in run at the third time. Odometer will show Done when all ok, or any fault code(s).

Re: rad fan runs constantly

Ahh so my new friend (the seller) misled me, there is something else throwing the code. Thanks for the heads up. I do have a reader with live scan but I'll do the ignition thing and see what I find. Thanks again, it's nice to find such a well versed forum so quickly.

Re: rad fan runs constantly

The still can be something wrong with the cooling fan though. There is a control solenoid which gets its signal from the PCM for the control of the fan speed. Jeep doesn't sell this solenoid separate, only the complete fan assy (read expensive). There is however an alternate solenoid from Ford which is the same, only the connector is different. Lets first see with which code you come up.

Re: rad fan runs constantly

Wasn't able to get codes using ignition but reader gave me 4 codes 0135, 0155, 0141 and 1499, seems the first three are O2 heater performance but I can't get info on 1499, maybe the solonoid.

Re: rad fan runs constantly

Wait, I found a sb stating that the soloniod failure is 1499 and that the part has been released separately bulliten #07-005-02, the part # is 05102210aa, think I might be ok after all. I may get back into this...

Re: rad fan runs constantly

The solenoid was sold separately in the beginning, but they discontinued it lateron.
Now you say that you have O2 heater codes, i would say check the fuses. I remember our member cheapjeep who had the 1499 code and that a fuse was blown from the O2 sensor heater(s) due to a wire which melted against a hot exhaust pipe.

Re: rad fan runs constantly

I just checked the wiring diagram and its indeed fuse 16 (15 A) in the PDC which is feeding the O2 heaters and the hydraulic cooling module. Its most probably blown due to a short in one of the O2 heater wirings.

Re: rad fan runs constantly

Ok, gives me a burnt wire to find and a fuse to replace, great info. Yeah the service bulliten was from '02, nice of them to stop selling it separately.
