Rear Axle

So went under my WJ to find the cause of my clunking brakes to find wear spots on the caliper mount where the pads ride. ???? Only to find the true cause is the fact that the face of my axle shaft is running out .04 one side and .02 the other. My question is how do I find out whether this is the diff housing ?#@$ed carrier or bent axle shaft. I don't think its the carrier there's no scary noises or play in the bearings. Haven't taken the cover of yet.
Any thoughts????
