Rear axle bearing/seal

2004 GC, Dana 35. both sides of the rear axle were leaking. Replaced bearings/seals. Drivers side. no leak. But Pass side leaked. Thinking that the bearing wasnt pressed all the way, I pulled the axle back out on the pass side(race stayed in place) and was able to press a tiny bit. The leak stopped about 300 miles and now is back. Both sides have movement in and out. (1/4") IS THIS NORMAL?? Also someone was in there before and left a small drill(looks to be 1/8" diam) hole right at the edge of the seal surface(at the edge where the bearing seats against the step). At first I thought, it wasnt a concern because i didnt think it sealed that close to the edge, now im not so sure. Is there a way to fill it, i did fill it with grease and may explain why it took 300 miles b4 the leak came back. Was thinking Id do the job over and this time replace bearing plate too. The bearing seems loose. Not only is there in and out movement but can also move up and down slightly. Would that be a waste to try another bearing or should I just bite the bullet and buy a shaft? thanx

Re: Rear axle bearing/seal

Normally a drill is used to start the removal of the retaining ring, but it doesn´t sit close to where the seal sits. Also they should not have touched the axle itself with the drill. Axial play is not normal. Is the retaining ring pressed against the bearing?

Re: Rear axle bearing/seal

thanx for reply frank. yeah, i dont know why they drilled up on where the seal sits.. Looks like they had a hard time, it wasnt only place they drilled into shaft. Yes the retainer is all the way. I was not certain the Dana shaft came as a pre-assembled unit as mentioned b4, So I ordered the Dorman kit. from Summit.

Re: Rear axle bearing/seal

So could you see where the axial play was coming from? Most probably from the bearing itself?

Re: Rear axle bearing/seal

oh yeah the bearing is very sloppy. much worse than the one that I replaced, because of the leak.. Its a timken. As a side note, Ive always had a squeak at that wheel, that stops when the brakes are applied. And worse with new bearing. Maybe its something I did, but dont see how.

This doesn't sound good at all. There should be virtually no slop in any direction. the seal will never be able to do it's job if there is that much movement.

Re: Rear axle bearing/seal

Update: So it went well, Replaced in about an hour. No leak, no noise. All good. As far as the Dorman brand axle kit. Seems ok. Bearing pressed hard and slow. . Does not come with the mounting plate, so had to grind off bearing on old shaft to reuse old one. No biggie. It does not come assembled, so you need access to a press.
