That is not just a leak that is a dump... I have only seen a couple leaking that bad. Ultimately its up to you, it would wrong for anyone to give you a "dont worry about it". But in reality you would likely make it.

Re: Rear Axle Seal Leaking!!!

I don't know how far Colorado is from where you are now, but with the axle seal leaking bad enough that you have it on the tires, it might be better to just take your other Jeep.

You probably have already ruined the parking brake shoes on that side and if the seal is leaking it may mean that your wheel bearing has some play in it and should be replaced too. Which of course you might as well do both of them as well as the bearings in the diff, since the axles have to be pulled anyway.

Re: Rear Axle Seal Leaking!!!

Am I missing something or where are you getting that it's leaking on the wheel?

My rear passenger axle seal is slowely leaking and has been for awhile (I drive 70 miles every day). I have topping off the diff fluid to make sure it doesn't all leak out and there's no bearing noise. Even w/ all that, I'm replacing it soon and currently have parts on order.

this ^ when they take the rotor off to remove the axle they will see that the entire interior of the rotor hat (ebrake assembly and all) will be COVERED in gear lube.

realistically replacing both is a stretch, yes its a common failure, BUT because it is a common failure there is no need in spending the money before its required (and we all know it will eventually be required). ONE axle seal at my dealership costs from 290-430 dollars (dependant on the axle in the vehicle) and there is no overlap between doing both so your talking 600-860 dollars for repairing both (at the dealer of course). Bearings must be replaced with the seal as there is no way to remove the old bearing without cutting it off, not to mention even if there was it would be less than smart to not replace it for no additional labor since your in there.

Also for a diff overhaul (just replacing bearings) your looking at 1200 +/- dollars between the new seals required, 4 bearings, gear lube, and 8ish hours labor, that would make that a little overkill as far as preventative maintainence goes.

DAMN, that's EXPENSIVE. I just paid $50 for a new retaining plate, seal, bearing, and collar (I bought 2 kits, so $100). But mine is the D35 and I think the V8 rear end is different.

The overlap and cost savings of doing both at once is the diff fluid and shop cost for pressing on the bearings (my shop was $30 for 1 or 2 axles). Diff fluid is in the $20ish and $30 for shop cost, I'll save $50 by doing both at once.
