rear balljoint

ok guys so i thought i was going to have to do wheel bearings in the rear of my WJ. turns out the noise is my rear ball joint its pretty bad, no wmy question is. how many is there? is there just one on the top of the diff and the ctrol arm or whatever the big arm is up there.?? does anyone have a exploded view of the rear suspension and what is the best way to tackle this job? i was thinking maybe i just by the new arm and a new ball joint and put new right in and not just a ball joint. any help on this would be great. thanks to all that can help..

Joe

Re: rear balljoint

There's only 1 above the rear diff. I believe they are $60ish from the dealer or $31 here. http://www.quadratec.com/products/52449_1052.htm When I did mine I found it easier to pull the whole a-arm out and unbolted the three bolts bolts from the balljoint plate. They are a pain and were locktited in from the factory. You'll be using an open wrench and cussing alot.

Instead of using a press you can pound the old one out and then impact the new one back on into its in the correct spot.

See number 11
1) Standard Standard Back
2) Mount bolt Upper Back
3) Mount bolt Lower Back
4) Code skw zyw
5) Upper insulator Upper Back
6) Lower insulator Lower Back
7) Bumper Back
8) Spacer Back
9) Screw Back
10) Upper cntrl arm
11) Ball joint
12) Screw #1 Back
13) Screw #2
14) Ball joint Nut
15) Lower cntrl arm Back
16) Front bolt Back
17) Rear bolt Back

If you just mean the balljoint, I pasted a link in my originally reply.

I do believe I did mine on the ground, just make sure you have the ebrake on. If you don't, the axle will rotate once you remove the a-arm making it a pain to line back up when installing.

Re: rear balljoint

Oh man... I hated those 3 bolts. I have to say that 15% of the time it took me to left the rear of my WJ was just dealing with those 3 bolts. They are locked on and they are about 3" long if not longer (I have chosen not to remember ). and to make it worse.... you have to use and open ended wrench to get them out.

Re: rear balljoint

great lol so what im really hearing is i is a time consuming process of taking three main bolts out and cusing the whole time. sounds right up my alley lol ill take some bleeding pics when i get my parts lol. the control arm is like 113 on the net so around 150 for this job not as bad as i thought it was going to be..

thanks again all

Joe

Re: rear balljoint

I still don't understand why you are replacing the control arm. All you need to do is swap out the balljoint here http://www.quadratec.com/products/52449_1052.htm and reinstall it. If the two bushings are bad to, they are like ~$25 for both here http://www.quadratec.com/products/52088425.htm and you can just press the old ones out and the new ones in.

Re: rear balljoint

dont really have a press to do them. i have heard they are a pain in the ass to remove plus mine look rather bad some rust and such. would just rather have new going in. guess im weird like that.

Re: rear balljoint

That's cool. I just didn't want you to be replacing the a-arm if it wasn't needed.
