Rear diff oil change

Is it necessary to drop the fuel tank when I remove the cover from my rear diff. I have a very high pitch whine over 40 mph and suspected my diff oil needed changed. I have changed the oil in the transfer case and removed and resealed the front diff. The oil was low in both and the whine has dropped consideralby. I wish to do the rear but I am not sure I can get to all the bolts without dropping the tank. Any advice? Thanks.

Re: Rear diff oil change

No, dropping the tank is not necessary. Just lift the car with a jack far enough to have access to the upper bolts. Use some stands to work safe.
If your diff has trac-loc or vari-loc, addition of limited slip additive would be necessary.

Re: Rear diff oil change

Yeah, just jack it up and place axle stands on the frame rails. That'll give you enough access.

Re: Rear diff oil change

Just worked on mine this week just put the jack stands under the frame not the axle when the suspension is fully extended it makes it a lot easier to access the top bolts.
