rear suspension noise.

I,ve had my Jeep 1 year now and thanks to ACD,Lancashire ive added many new parts to her, headlight units, wing mirrors and solinoids for both doors.

My Jeep [ Wolfie ] is raised and so soon be ready for off roading, however, several times ive been through large puddles I get a banging noise at the rear of the Jeep, which after a while goes away and this only haoppens after ive been through the large puddles, I have in the past had the brushes checked, but they were ok, has anyone any idea what the issue is , or is this typical Jeep.

Re: rear suspension noise.

when you lifted it did you change the shocks. As the std shocks work well but can top out causing a bang.

Re: rear suspension noise.

Some typical WJ noises can come from the lower shock bolts (from which the necks are standard a bit too thin), the upper control arm center ball joint or worn bushings. But since it makes the noise only after going through a puddle of water, i doubt that one of these would be the problem here.
Does the banging noise follow the up and down movement of the jeep (so that you know that it should be suspension related), or does it not?

Re: rear suspension noise.

Mate not know what is under their you best take it to someone who kmows jeeps ans get then to check. If the original shocks are used it could just be topping but it is hard to know without seeing it. If it wa something bad u would think you would be hearing more regularly
.
Good luck.

Re: rear suspension noise.

Thanks guys,

It sounds like the problem I had before which was the shocks / brushes and im now thinking it could just be coincidence that it made the noise after going through a very large puddle, as its only just happened today, after reading your replys it does sound like it could be these shocks as shes 14 years old .

When I first had her I did get a similar noise when going over bumps and fields and had the brushes/shocks checked after this the noise stopped,so maybe they have come loose again because they are old .

Re: rear suspension noise.

If these are still the first set of shocks , i would suspect them for sure.

Re: rear suspension noise.

Looking at the paper work I have , and most of the service history is missing , it looks like she last had a service around 2006 , so looks very likely it will be the shocks that need replacing or that they have just come loose, but will get them checked out.

Many thanks for your help.

See if when you lightly pull the parking brake if that causes the noise to stop. My Jeep has been making a clunking noise for years and I cannot find it. I've replaced the rear ball joint and both bushings on the upper control arm. The shocks are solid and the lower control arms are also solid. It clunks when going over rough terrain some times but not every time. But if I pull the parking brake 1 or 2 clicks, the noise doesn't happen.

I don't know what it is, but it leaves me scratching my head.

Re: rear suspension noise.

Dear JEEP ME,
Im glad its not just me having this problem, today the noise is no longer there, I had the same problem as you when going over rough ground and had a good mechanic check exactly what you had checked and with the same result, the noise went away for about a year and returned after I drove through a large puddle and was noticeable on the day , yesterday very little noise and a lot more quite and today no noise.I will try the parking brake if the noise re-appears and will keep you informed and also if I ever find out what the mystery noise is.
Many thanks for sharing that with me.
Regards

I wish I could give you a solution if it's your problem but I've just learned to ignore it because I cannot locate the problem.
