Question Replacing 99 WJ blower motor resistor-have connector question

Hi - I'm new to this forum and this is my first post. I have 99 Grand Cherokee Limited with auto temp a/c feature. Got the intermittent 'fan works/fan doesn't work' problem. Finally died completely. I can hear the doors/dampers opening when I turn on the air. No blower sounds. Little bit of cold (or hot in winter) air comes from vents when vehicle is moving. Nothing when stopped.

I read the post at http://www.wjjeeps.com/blower_motor.htm and decided to replace blower motor resistor first. The old resistor had 2 sets of wires coming from it: 1. 3-wire set that will be spliced into new plug provided with the wiring package and, 2. a 2-wire (red and black) connector (hard wired into the resistor) was dangling free - not plugged in anywhere.

Have spliced in the new wiring kit (3 green wires) to the new resistor, reinstalled the resistor, reconnected the battery -- and nothing is acting different. The hardwired red and black wire connector isn't plugged in yet anywhere -- Should it be? If so, to where? - thought I'd better ask before I replace more parts.

I presume that you have checked the fuse first?
According the WJ service manual, when you have the Automatic Zone Control system, you don't have a resistor, but a blower motor controller. Did you get the right part?

Checked all fuses first-none blown. Found the same conflict blower motor resistor vs. blower motor controller for AZC system. The part I ordered was called a Blower Motor Resistor Module and Wiring Pigtail Repair Kit PART # 5102406AA, 5012699AA. The new blower motor resistor part matched the one I took off - they both looked like the one pictured here: Both had the same part # labeled on the part itself.

The red/black wire connector shown was not connected anywhere on the old one - just suspiciously dangling under the glove compartment. The 3-wire connector was firmly connected - couldn't see where the 3 wires terminated. Doesn't seem right that the red/black connector wouldn't connect somewhere, does it?

I had to replace the resistor on my jeep.....actually, the resistor itself wasn't bad, it was the connection that was melted and shorted out. I actually tore apart the old resistor and using the wiring kit ordered from Chryster, rebuilt the resistor. If I remember correctly the red/black connetor plugged into the resistor. I spliced the wires using the provided shrink sleeves. IN the kit there were also 2 or 3 green wires. I did not have to use them in my situation. Perhaps somebody tried this common repair on you jeep and did it incorrectly. I'll look at mine again next time i get in it just to make sure I told you everything correctly.

the red and black wire connector should be connected to your blower.

Its a common repair that is done incorrectly. But those wires definitley should attach to the motor. From memory I think there was only the red and black wire.

I just replaced the blower resistor and the wiring on my 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited with a total cost of 145.00 for the resistor and 18.00 for the wiring which I bought from Mt Ephraim Dodge in NJ (home of the marked up prices). The subject of the black and red wiring and where it is plugged in is simple. The wires run into the firewall than wrap around and back into the cab and ends up plugged into the blower motor on the right side of it. You can easily see it under the glove box. All you need to do is cut the wires and pull them out, that is if you buy a new resistor. This is really an easy fix. it just looks difficult.

exactly!

You can change all the modules you want, with out power to the blower motor its futile.

3 green go to the module and black and red go to the blower motor itself located under the dash right up next to the glove compartment near the passenger side kick plate.
