Selec-Trac Question

Does anyone know if the front drive shaft is supposed to be always engaged to the front axle or hubs when in 2WD? I know the transfer case is disengaged from the front axle in 2WD. I would have sworn that I could turn the front drive shaft by hand previously, meaning that the front axle and drive shaft were stationary when in 2WD. If I try to turn it by hand now, it won't... presumably the front axle and drive shaft are always turning even though it is disengaged from the transfer case.

Normal or is something supposed to release the front drivetrain from the wheels?

Re: Selec-Trac Question

It's normal. When changing from 2wd to 4wd, you're linking them in the transfer case. If you were able to spin the front driveshaft by hand, something would have to be disengaged in the front differential. Nothing happens in the front diff so the drive shaft will always spin when the front wheels are turning.

But in 2wd, the driveshaft is a follower. In 4wd, it's a driver.

Re: Selec-Trac Question

These Jeeps do not have automatic locking hubs like some other vehicles do. So the front driveshaft will always be turning when the front wheels are rolling.

If you you had a vehicle with locking hubs that were disengaged then the driveshaft would not turn while you were in 2wd and you could turn the d/s by hand when parked.

Re: Selec-Trac Question

Got it! Thanks for the clear explanations. I could have sworn that I turned that front d/s while changing oil once, but obviously I couldn't have. I was going to take it in to have it checked but wanted to make sure I didn't spend $69 to have them tell me it's normal.

Re: Selec-Trac Question

If the wheels were off the ground you might have been able to turn the front driveshaft by hand.

No, I've never been underneath with the wheels off the ground, but I know what you mean. I must have been remembering a previous 4wd pickup.
