Select Trac repair

New to the forum. Here's my first question. 1999 grand- had a used front drive shaft installed. Old one removed 5-6 years ago. The 4wd works although there is definately noise in the front end. Also, does not come out of 4 to 2 very well. Could everything just be dry or should I be checking something else?

Re: Select Trac repair

I would first check the fluid level in the T-case and change it if it was not done yet (for the difficult engagement). The noise from the front end can come from the diff (check fluid level and check fluid for glinstering, sign of wear), the propeller shaft joints or the drive shafts CV joints.

Re: Select Trac repair

I second what Frango said. I recently had a noise in my 99 WJ turned out to be the drive shaft CV joint on the transfer case side.

You can get a junkyard piece, or rebuild yours.

As for shifting the tcase, no offense meant but are you shifting it correctly? Just want to eliminate human error from the equation.

Re: Select Trac repair

since its been cold my 4.0 wj has had a hell of a time shift from 4 parttime / full time i would have to drive around for about 2 miles before it shifts back into 2wd annoying as hell but it only happens in the cold.
