Slow starting up... fuel pump?

In the past few months, my WJ has been slow to start (hesitates, slow to turn over) and then sort of sputters for a few seconds. It doesn't happen all the time. More random than anything. It has 125K miles and is regularly maintained. Could it be something other than the fuel pump going? Starter perhaps? Water in the gas?

All other levels, etc. are normal.

Change the "V" in your signature to "I" THEN check your battery

Got it! I think. Got a new battery two years ago, but will check/clean the cables just in case.

Re: Slow starting up... fuel pump?

I would first check the fuel filter.

Re: Slow starting up... fuel pump?

When the engine turns over more slowly then usual, i also would first check the battery charge. The battery can be relatively new, but when the charging system doesnīt work right, it could still be low on charge.
Secondly it could be the starter/solenoid or corrosion on one of the starter wiring connectors.

Re: Slow starting up... fuel pump?

^^^
That's a different interpretation then I had, good catch. I took slow to start/turn over as meaning he had to crank it longer then usual. I wonder what the OP is actually experiencing.

Re: Slow starting up... fuel pump?

I was having the same problem with my 03 WJ, I went and replaced the battery and I am no longer experiencing the problem.
