Snapping steering column noise (repaired once)
Newbie to the forum, hope I haven't missed the whole section on the popping/clicking steering columns...
Had the TSB repair done in '07. Bought the '03 WJ overland in '06. Column was quiet for about 6 mos. Snaps/pops/ticks intermittently and is then quiet for a while then starts up again. Only when driving.
Was in rare form for the last two weeks just going off all over the place. Happens with road input on the straight mostly, sometimes with turning.
Often resting my hand on the top of the wheel while driving and letting off will illicit a lower volume pop/tick.
Had intermediate steering shaft replaced a while ago as well.
Any one had the TSB/shim repair fail? The dealer just did the shims, didn't replace the tilt housing assembly when the repair was done.
Can't get anything else to pop/click or re-create the sound. Tilt lever, multifunction switch etc. Can't specifically locate with a stethoscope (while driving) either.
Could a clock spring tick/pop like this? No electrical/MIF lights associated with the noise. I do occasionally get a dry sounding noise (vibratory squeak) from the steering wheel/clock spring area while turning the wheel at slow speed (pulling out of a parking space) that is intermittent (uncommon) but quite loud. Can't quite come up with the word to describe it.
Any hints on what I am missing? Need to flush the power steering fluid but levels ok, no pump noise. Have gotten the tires off the ground to move them around yet.
Any thoughts appreciated. I've spent hours scouring the internet, other forums and havent' found an answer yet.
