Some issues with my WJ

Hello! First post here. Just bought my first (of many) jeeps. I have a 2001 WJ. 6 cylinder, 4.0. 151k miles. Runs and drives great. But I have some minor issues that I hope one of you could help me diagnose.

1) the shifter is a bit funky. I have to put the car in neutral to get it to go into reverse and put it in 2 to get it to go into drive. Car sometimes will not start due to not being properly set in park as well. When I bought the WJ, I was told "the shifter cable has some play in it" but my friends are saying it would be the shifter linkage and it just needs to be tightened. Any info on how to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated. (I.e. How to take the shifter apart and what to do)

2) within the first 10-15 minutes of driving the vehicle, I hear a whistling noise when I press on the gas. Fades out as I let off the gas and also immediately goes away when the jeep shifts to the next gear but it doesn't have to be shifting to do it so I don't think it's the transmission.

Again any help would be appreciated. I've only had this WJ for about 3 weeks and I'm loving it! Never buying a different brand of vehicle again!

Re: Some issues with my WJ

Welcome to the garage.
I canīt attach any manual page now (on the job), but i copied the procedure for adjusting the shift cable:

ADJUSTMENTS - GEARSHIFT CABLE
Check adjustment by starting the engine in PARK
and NEUTRAL. Adjustment is CORRECT if the
engine starts only in these positions. Adjustment is
INCORRECT if the engine starts in one but not both
positions. If the engine starts in any position other
than PARK or NEUTRAL, or if the engine will not
start at all, the park/neutral position switch or TRS
may be faulty.
(1) Shift transmission into PARK.
(2) Remove floor console as necessary for access to
the shift cable adjustment. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INTERIOR/
FLOOR CONSOLE - REMOVAL)
(3) Loosen the shift cable adjustment screw (Fig.
105).
(4) Raise vehicle.
(5) Unsnap cable eyelet from transmission shift
lever (Fig. 106).
(6) Verify transmission shift lever is in PARK
detent by moving lever fully rearward. Last rearward
detent is PARK position.
(7) Verify positive engagement of transmission
park lock by attempting to rotate propeller shaft.
Shaft will not rotate when park lock is engaged.
(8) Snap cable eyelet onto transmission shift lever.
(9) Lower vehicle
(10) Tighten the shift cable adjustment screw to 7
N·m (65 in.lbs.).
(11) Verify correct operation.

Re: Some issues with my WJ

Thanks for the response. Going to dig into that issue next weekend.

Did you have any insight or info on my 2nd issue? Looks like the whistling only happens when the engine is running cold.
