Stalling when hot

I have a 99 Grand Cherokee Limited, V-8 that stalls when hot but not overheated. The gauges lose power and after a while it starts back up when gauges start working again. I know lots of people has this problem but I havent found a solution yet. Has anyone found the real problem? It only has 116,ooo miles and runs excellent when it does run. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Stalling when hot

Welcome to the garage.
Do the gauges loose power first and then the engine stalls, or does the engine stall and consequently the indications go down? Or is the whole instrument panel acting strange?
When the engine stalls first, its mainly a crank or cam sensor. Did you try the keydance to check for faults? Ignition switch off/run three times and leave in run at the third time. Odometer will show Done, or any fault code(s).

Re: Stalling when hot

Gauges fail as the Jeep stalls. I changd the cam sensor and crankshaft position sensor with no luck. I checked for codes but nothing is showing up. I cleaned all contacts and grounds, tried swapping out relays, new battery, and searched wiring harneses for bare wires. My 04 GC was randomly idling really bad and stalling and I found a bare wire behind the valve cover (4.0)where it was rubbing. Been working on my 99 off and on for 3 years.

Re: Stalling when hot

Do all 4 gauges return to left position? Any lights on?
This could be a problem with the PCM, but eventually also a PCI bus problem.
Next time check if the power windows still work, because that could confirm a PCI bus problem. Did you see the SKIM key light lit on the instrument panel?

Re: Stalling when hot

Yes the gauges all move back to the left position when it stalls and all the lights on the dash come on including the key symbol. I never tried the windows but I will. I forgot to mention that the new battery also goes dead if I dont unhook it.Thank you. I appreciate the help.

Re: Stalling when hot

So there is some component which continues to use power with ignition off.
Did you check if the ignition switch is not faulty? You should only be able to remove the key in off position and not in ACC.
But all the gauges get their signal from the PCM via the PCI data bus. So a problem in the PCM could cause your problems, but also any of the other components connected to the PCI data bus.
Since your jeep is a 99 model, it has a plug under the steering wheel where you can disconnect most of the components from the PCI bus. PCM and SKIM will still be connected together, so you could try if the stalling will stop with the plug disconnected. This does mean that most of the components will not work (no instruments, no power windows and a whole lot of other things. On the job now, but i can have a look into it when at home lateron. There are in fact some threads regarding PCI data bus problems where i mentioned the disconnect plug. I will see if i can find it again.
But since your problem seems to be temperature related, i wonder if its not the PCM itself.
But i also do remember a member who had similar problems who found a broken wire in the drivers door boot which was causing all his problems. After the repair it was all ok again.

Re: Stalling when hot

Also have a look at this tread: Never ever again!
Here the problem was moisture ingress into connector C200, which sits on the passengers side bulkhead. Most probably not your problem, since yours seems to be more temperature related, but you never know.

Well I didn't have time to dig too deep but I did notice that I can remove my key in any position and even while running. It kept running while jiggling the switch and when the key was removed. I didn't let it run long enough to shut down and test anything else, it usually runs for about an hour before it shuts off in cold weather.

Re: Stalling when hot

That you can remove the key in any position is due to a bad ignition key barrel. Take care to look at the position when removing the key, because in ACC position you will drain your battery quickly.
