Starts, dies after 2 seconds, sentry key?

Hi All,

2001 Grand Cherokee 4.0. Car has been sitting for 3 months (but had no issues before) and battery went dead this weekend. Replaced with a new battery, car started and ran first attempt in the driveway. Parked it, turned it off, ran an errand, went to start again and it fired up and then died 2 seconds later. Yellow "sentry key" light illuminated on dash, along with red "check gauges" light and low fuel light. Tried repeatedly to start and it continually shuts out. I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the key, I know it's working.

Car has a full tank of gas. If I put the key in the "on" position, the fuel gauge and voltmeter do not move like they are supposed to.

I unplugged the battery for 30 mins or so, reconnected, tried again and of course it fired. Drove it home, turned it off, tried to restart, and once again it will not start and stay running.

Where should I start? I only have one key for this car. All fuses look good.

Re: Starts, dies after 2 seconds, sentry key?

Fuel level and volt indication come from the PCM, via the PCI data bus. Also the key ok signal from the SKIM (sentry key immobilizer module) to the PCM goes via the PCI data bus. For some reason a module is messing with the bus, so that the signals canīt be red anymore. The engine will than start, but die after some seconds. Not sure which module is causing this and why, but will see if i can come up with something.

Can you cycle your key on, then off, then on, then off and then on again. Does it give you a code on the odometer? And are you using a grey colored key? Grey color indicates a chipped key.

Can you start the vehicle again after 30-60 minutes after it has been running prior? Could be P0320, crankshaft position sensor. Frango is great at getting stuff figured out... he helped me out. Cycle your key and tell us what P code shows on the odometer. Also if it does turn out to be the CKP... use a Mopar replacement. Anything else is junk.

Also when you go to put the key in the 'on' position, is the sentry key light solid or flashing?
