Tracking down "clicking" noise

My 99 Grand Cherokee has had loud "clicking" noise and "binding" in tight turns (especially reverse) for quite a while. I assumed front CV joints failing but had not gotten around to repair yet. Now I am getting some "chirping" occasionally, constant (but quieter) "clicking" even when driving straight line, and occasionally a rumbling with vibration. There is a fair amout of rotational play from the front wheel to the transfer case if one wheel is off the ground and rotate/rocked. Also slight in/out and up/down movement in the front driveshaft at the transfer case.
From what I have read, the problem could be anything in that front drive system. Transfer case, transfer case chain, front drive shaft (CV style), front differential, front axles.
How can I narrow it down (short of just driving till failure!)???

Re: Tracking down "clicking" noise

Is the cv boot torn open at the t-case front shaft? If it is start there. Unbolt it and make sure it moves freely. Shake it before you unbolt it if it's sloppy or makes any metal tinny noises it's garbage. Do not get one from your local parts store as I've put many in at work and they are bad within a year. Go oem only, very expensive but worth it.

Re: Tracking down "clicking" noise

Check the fluid level in front diff and T-case and check the fluid for evidence of metal glinsters. If ok, you could remove the front propeller shaft and drive around without it, to see if all noise is gone. If still noisy, it can be a drive shaft CV joint or wheel bearing. If you say that you have some up/down movement of the propeller shaft at the T-case, then you probably have some problem with the CV joint. I changed mine last year with a part from Rockauto.com and its performing well.
