Tranfer case or something else????

We have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has a rough, sort of clunking sound when turning sharp both directions. It appears to be coming from the center of the drive train. Any ideas? It was suggested it may be a progressive coupler.

Re: Tranfer case or something else????

Does your car have Quadra Drive? If so, it can be that there is not (enough)limited slip additive in one or both diffs. Was the oil changed lately? Otherwise i would first check the oil from the diffs and the Tcase for signs of metal particles and change them to see if this will solve the problem.

Re: Tranfer case or something else????

I checked all fluid levels and they are clean and full. Any other suggestions?

Re: Tranfer case or something else????

Was the oil from the diffs and T-case changed lately? If not, i would start here.
If the oil was changed, then the question is if you have Quadra Drive or not. With Quadra Drive some limited slip additive should be added to both diffs, otherwise some strange noise can be heard when making curves.
If T-case fluid was changed, was the right fluid used?
I would not suspect the T-case progressive coupler as the problem, because the progressive coupler in there should only transfer part of the torque to the front wheels when there is a difference in speed between the front and the aft drive shafts.

Re: Tranfer case or something else????

My son in law just informed me that he changed all the gear boxes with proper lubricants in August 2010. Upon doing so, he realized that the transfer case had lost it's seal and was very low or out of lubricant. Any ideas based on this info? Transfer case damaged?

Re: Tranfer case or something else????

Driving around with low fluid level is not good for any gearbox, so there is a good change that something is ruined inside. Sure that the right fluids are used for the diffs and T-case? Donīt know which T-case you have, can you put it in 4-LO? I would test that first to see if there is any change in the sound. Donīt drive fast though in 4-LO position. Best to do this in a quiet place.
