Trans over temp - 2001 grand

New to this site...but hoping to get pointed in the right direction.

Got the above light on a 100 degree day. Shut it down immediately....and let it cool off. Started up and moved on down the road...temp stayed down. Now, when I sit for to long...(drive thru)...temp guage starts to slowly rise.

What could this be? Haven't checked the fluids personally yet...but trusted fellow who did for me.

Check your themostat, coolant, look for coolant leaks.

Also are your fans on when it heats up?

Re: Trans over temp - 2001 grand

Where you actually driving when the light came on, or just standing still? The light will be switched on when the transmission fluid temp rises to 135 C (275F).
If the coolant temperature gets higher, the transmission temperature will rise as well, since the trans fluid is cooled with coolant in the radiator. It can be that the cooling fan is not working well, so then when standing still or stop and go traffic the coolant temperature will go up. How high is the coolant temperature and did you see the coolant temperature when the transmission over temp light came on?

Re: Trans over temp - 2001 grand

I have replaced the fan (entire fan, and motor) thermostat, water pump and sensor behind the head light. Surely that isn't it!!! It's been running great, no temperature problems for close to a year now.

I was sitting still, and had been parked for about 10 minutes. Was at the red line when I heard the "bell" and saw the trans over temp light on. Immediately shut it down!!!! Waited for it to cool before starting back up.

The temp guage, raises slowly sitting still....not moving. When I move, the temp setting goes back down.

No shifiting problems.....

Re: Trans over temp - 2001 grand

You say that the temperature goes to the redline, right? That is the engine coolant temperature right? So you have a cooling problem. That the fan/thermostat and probably fan relay where changed a year ago, doesn't say anything. The fan relays are well known to burn frequently. Did you personally check that the fan was running full speed? When for example the coolant temperature rises to 120 C, the trans fluid temp can easily go to 135 and give the trans over temp light.

Re: Trans over temp - 2001 grand

First make sure your cooling fan is working. I was going to say water pump also but you say when you are moving the temps stay down so that means your pump is working. I would check your cooling fan and your rad cap...
