Re: trans will not engage

The original accumulator plate is too flexible and can overload one of the bolts and just break the bolt. More bolts can break thereafter and you would loose the function of one or more accumulators. I had burnt fluid in my transmission and the smell was quite strong and for sure i could smell it from the fluid at the dipstick. Also the fluid on the dipstick was dark and didnīt look anything like red anymore. The color had changed due to the overheating and due to the clutch material which was mixed in the fluid.
Normally the valve body can be reused, when the problem is the broken accumulator plate bolts. A good repair shop can remove the broken bolts. Then you can install a transgo shiftkit, which already comes with a much stronger accumulator plate and stronger springs. Costs around USD 80 i believe. This shift kit makes the shift times shorter, reducing the wear of the clutches and lowering the transmission temperature.
And no idea which place will be better for a rebuild.

Re: trans will not engage

If you want to attach a picture or any other attachment, just use the paperclip sign above the text field.
I did the transmission removal/installation on my own with the jeep on stands and it took me one full day to remove. A specialized shop with a bridge and all the right tools should be able to remove it in 3-4 hours, installation more or less the same.
Without having seen the picture of the valve body, i already know that the accumulator involved is the L-R accumulator, maybe also its nabour, the 2C accumulator. If the accumulator piston is completely pushed out, then you loose all line pressure for the L-R clutch (used for 1st and R) and the jeep will simply not move at all. The TCM is monitoring the input and output speeds and sees that with a certain input speed, there is not a corresponding output speed. Code P0731 will be set (incorrect gear ratio in 1). At that moment the TCM will start a test to see if the pressure switches work. Since the line pressure is bled away via the open accumulator bore, the pressure switches will not be actuated and P1791 will be set. P1732, P1734 and P1784 are all pressure switch circuit faults, most probably caused by the first problem. The P1780 iīm not sure if it has anything to do with your problem, because its a fault code for the overdrive switch circuit.
Now it is important to know if the fluid really was burnt or eventual clutch material was present on the bottom of the trans pan. If not, then i would only do a repair on the valve body. Broken accumulator plate bolt(s) can be removed or eventual pulled out threads be repaired with a helicoil insert.
I would like to see the pictures the shop made to have a better idea what the actual damage is.

Re: trans will not engage

Yes, i do see, the pictures now and i also see now that i was wrong about which accumulators. These are the OD (over drive) and UD (under drive) accumulators.
Did you see the fluid which came out?

Re: trans will not engage

The trans shop is telling me that there is a lot of upgrades that can be done to the trans if they rebuild it. Is that correct?

Re: trans will not engage

Yes, there are some upgrades available. That can be better clutches or eventually a shiftkit. The transgo shiftkit (costs about USD 90 i believe) has an upgraded (stronger/stiffer) accumulator plate, a stronger clutch pack circlip for the UD clutch (when i remember well), some heavier/ better springs for inside the pump assy and it makes the shifts shorter and firmer, reducing clutch wear and lowering the trans temp. Most of the accumulator springs will be replaced with stronger ones and the line pressure will increase approx 15 psi, which gives larger holding forces for the clutch packs, reducing slip.
