Transfer Case Question

First, I have a 2003 WJ Laredo, 85k miles, Selec-Trac TC.

This is the first winter that I've had my Jeep and yesterday was the first light dusting of snow of the year. I drove the Jeep to work in "4 Full Time" because I felt like it. When I got to the parking lot and went to turn into a spot, I turned the wheel hard. As I was slowely turning into the spot, the wheels started to bind. Is this normal while in "4 Full Time"? Yes, I am 110% sure the selector was in "4 Full Time" and not "4 Part Time".

I thought "4 Full Time" caused the TC to act like an open differential. This should mean that the wheels should not bind. I'm assuming the Jeep was infact in "4 Part Time" and for some reason wouldn't kick into "4 Full Time". Does anyone else have the Selec-Trac TC? And does it do this while you're in 4 Full Time?

I bought the Jeep about 10k-12k miles ago so I do not know when the last time (if at all) the TC fluid was changed. I'm thinking I may need to change that so it will engage into 4 Full Time instead of 4 Part Time. I looked on wjjeeps but was only able to find the fluid and capacity for the transmission. Does anyone know what I should buy and how much to change the fluid?

Re: Transfer Case Question

That's completely normal. The tighter the turn, the more it's going to feel like it's going to crawl over itself while in 4WD.

Re: Transfer Case Question

Well that's good to know. My buddy has a 2000 WJ and his does not do that when in 4 Full Time (but it does in 4 Part Time). I know one of ours isn't right. As I was reading about how it works I was fearing that it was mine.

I think I'm still going to change the fluid b/c I don't know when/if it was last done. I read it was a few quarts of ATF+4 fluid. Should be quick and painless to change.

Rep given to all (except TJXJWJ, I have to wait 24 hours) for the help.

Re: Transfer Case Question

i have owned mine from 20 miles to today at 133K miles; over 12 years. It has always done it in fulltime. I would say its more noticeable in part time.

fluid changes is good. my axles ahve been done at 50K and 100K, I do all my own maintenance.
