Transfer Case Question

First, I have a 2003 WJ Laredo, 85k miles, Selec-Trac TC.

This is the first winter that I've had my Jeep and yesterday was the first light dusting of snow of the year. I drove the Jeep to work in "4 Full Time" because I felt like it. When I got to the parking lot and went to turn into a spot, I turned the wheel hard. As I was slowely turning into the spot, the wheels started to bind. Is this normal while in "4 Full Time"? Yes, I am 110% sure the selector was in "4 Full Time" and not "4 Part Time".

I thought "4 Full Time" caused the TC to act like an open differential. This should mean that the wheels should not bind. I'm assuming the Jeep was infact in "4 Part Time" and for some reason wouldn't kick into "4 Full Time". Does anyone else have the Selec-Trac TC? And does it do this while you're in 4 Full Time?

I bought the Jeep about 10k-12k miles ago so I do not know when the last time (if at all) the TC fluid was changed. I'm thinking I may need to change that so it will engage into 4 Full Time instead of 4 Part Time. I looked on wjjeeps but was only able to find the fluid and capacity for the transmission. Does anyone know what I should buy and how much to change the fluid?

That's completely normal. The tighter the turn, the more it's going to feel like it's going to crawl over itself while in 4WD.

Well that's good to know. My buddy has a 2000 WJ and his does not do that when in 4 Full Time (but it does in 4 Part Time). I know one of ours isn't right. As I was reading about how it works I was fearing that it was mine.

I think I'm still going to change the fluid b/c I don't know when/if it was last done. I read it was a few quarts of ATF+4 fluid. Should be quick and painless to change.

Rep given to all (except TJXJWJ, I have to wait 24 hours) for the help.

Hi All -

My ride is 2009 Commander, 3.7, NV140 Xfer case.
Started hearing a low grr sound, according to our local differential guy you can spend a BUNCH of money until you find it's from 40-70mph you hear it... and it turns out to be the FRONT cv joint on the front end driveshaft, meaning you have to buy that whole short shaft.

Unfortuneately, I searching, i changed out the NV140 xfer case fluid...
and it now makes a lot of whine noise, when it used to make NONE.

I put in the ATF+4 stuff our local Chrysler guys sold me.
It INSTANTLY started sounding bad, even just driving out of the driveway.

I do not know what was in it before... it didn't look or smell or feel exactly like transmission fluid.

Can i use the NV245 juice, or the Amsol version of it?
Would it help with the racket?

how about Lucas?

Thanks, from a total newbie to these little tiny new cars...

Welcome to the garage.
The NV140 T-case uses ATF+4. Are you sure that you put the right amount of fluid in there?
The special fluid which is used in the NV245 is not recommended for the NV140.

oh, yes. At 32$ for two quarts... I can definitely remember Chrysler thinking that highly of their flavor ATF+4. Personally, I like Lucas, but was afraid of doing something wrong, after all, it does say 'Jeep'.

Now i'm in a real pickle.

BTW - Chrylser dealership said it took 1.1 qts. Ha. Don't know as even the
entire first quart fit. ended up doing the old school... fill it till its at the bottom of the hole...

Thanks!

oh, it seems this xfer case is also used in BMW? Not a lot to it.
Some kind of torque limiter or converter on the input...
a chain... and an output.

The stuff that came out was more of a gold color... and a little thicker than
standard ATF (from what I can tell/remember). Came out all at once, and,
since it mixed with a pan of other oils... I can't go back and look but from memory it's sure tempting to think it was some version of the clear synthetic, just like in the differentials!
