Transmission fluid

Hi all,

I was reading through a Hayes repair book and it states that transmission fluid should be changed when cold. I was always taught that it should be changed when the fluid is hot so that more of the old fluid id drained. Is this different for Jeeps? Thanks.

Re: Transmission fluid

That's what I do every time. Are you planning on doing a transmission change.

Re: Transmission fluid

Could be right...

When I got mine changed a little while ago it sat outside for a hour or so before it went into the dealer. I thought they just messed up their timetable too.

Re: Transmission fluid

If you are going to drop the pan, there will be no getting around having the atf going everywhere. Chances are you'll get some on your hands and the last thing you want is for it to be hot. ATF is about as fluid as water even when cold and it will drain just fine.

^^^^^ yep . i agree. safety is the reasoning behind changing the tranny oil while cool.

Re: Transmission fluid

Just like all these other guys are saying, unless you want to burn your hands, drop a hot tranny pan on the ground & make a huge mess, let it cool off. And letting it sit overnight is always better than just an hour or 2 if you can wait.

Re: Transmission fluid

use a fair sized storage container as your drip pan. you wont get wet that way
