Re: Transmission Over Temp

Transmission overtemp and also engine cooling temp at 125šC? First of all this engine doesnīt like to be overheated, because it will damage the cylinder heads gaskets and warp the heads. The transmission overtemp light will come on at 135 šC. First check the transmission fluid level, it could be low.
I think that you model jeep still has the transmission oil cooler in front of the radiator. Check if nothing is blocking the airflow through it. Any blockage (leaves, carton board or something alike) would explain the high temp for transmission and engine at the same time.
Problem could be in the instrument cluster as well, but wonīt expect both at the same time.

Re: Transmission Over Temp

earlier this morning, the temp went all the way up. I then put 4l of coolant in, 2 litres of tranmission and 2 litres of engine oil

For the last few weeks, i was dripping coolant, and other than topping up the resevoir, i wasnt too bothered.,

Now i think that the crack has expanded in the thaw.

When i start up Jeep, it dies straight away. After a few (fasle) starts, it stayed running long enough to get home, but again the temp was up to the max.

looking at the reflection off the car parked in front, the lights go off too, and flicker at the same as the revs. When i do manage to get driving, it goes fine.

The 4 litres of coolant flowed straight out of the resevoir, after approx 5kms, it was empty, which i think points to the crack getting bigger, dont know why it wont start and stay going though

Re: Transmission Over Temp

I'm guessing the car doesn't want to start with no coolant just guessing no real data

Re: Transmission Over Temp

hopefully thats all,
a spot weld on the rad might fix the leak,
Does the Cherokee have that capability to know when something is wrong, not to start?
thanks

Re: Transmission Over Temp

Oh yes, this car is very clever. When it knows you are not maintaining it well, he just refuses to work.

Re: Transmission Over Temp

this morning, started first time, reversed her, then she died, re-started but she wouldn't start. She turned over, but wouldn't kick in...... piece of shit is the worst i have ever owned, and that includes a Renault Laguna

Re: Transmission Over Temp

I donīt think that you can blame any type of car, when you donīt maintain it well. It is a piece of technology what needs proper care. When you drive around with low oil levels and low cooling liquid level, you canīt blame the car that it simply stops working.

4ltr of coolant and 2ltr each of trans and motor oil is more than a simple top off. If the car needed that much oil, the levels were too low. Are they now above the proper fill level? If yes, that may be what is causing the car to start and then stop (just a guess, not sure if it's even possible.)

If it leaked 4ltr of coolant in just a handful of km, you have a major if not a catastrophic leak. I would stop driving the car and have it towed. At the very least I would make my next destination the closest repair shop. As previously mentioned, overheating this engine will result in major damage that will be more expensive to fix than the coolant leak alone.

Let us know what the outcome is. Hopefully the leak can be fixed and you can get back on the road.
