transmission overdrive slip/chatter

So, my issue is this.... For a year or two now, my jeep wouldn't lock into that final gear till something got warmed up. If it's 70+ degrees, there's not a real problem and will lock in pretty well. But when it's colder, it will sit around 2300 rpms till warm up, then drop to around 1900 rpms at 60 mph. It's something that it did, and it didn't give me anymore issues till recently.

Now, I'm having a chatter or feeling like it's slipping in that gear. When traveling on level surface and constant speed, it seems fine. But if I go up a hill or just accelerate, i can feel something chattering or kinda feels like its slipping. The colder it gets, the worse it gets.

I'm about to do a fluid/filter change, but I'm starting to think that might not be the ultimate fix. I'm not sure if this is something that one of the transmission speed sensors would be causing or if there's something else I should look at changing while I'm under there?

Btw, I did do the key on/off 3 times and didn't get an error code. It just said "done".

Re: transmission overdrive slip/chatter

Overdrive is 4th and 5th gear. You probably mean the torque converter clutch lockup. Its normal behaviour thag the torque converter clutch will not lock until the fluid is at a.certain temperature.
Did you already check the fluid level and color/smell of the fluid?
If the transmission starts slipping, you should get a gear ratio message for that gear.

Re: transmission overdrive slip/chatter

Color is fine, but I know I need to change the fluid/filters no matter what. I've never changed it till now, and I've had it for 60k. Not sure if it was done before that.

So I should get a code if a sensor has gone bad you're saying? Not like it's hard to get back under there to change sensors after I change the fluid/filters, but I just figured I'd slap in some new TSS's. Can't do that today anyways cause my local store would need to order the sensors. So I'm thinking I'll do what I plan on doing and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply

Re: transmission overdrive slip/chatter

I would not expect a speed sensor. If it is slipping, then its or a too low line pressure, or a worn clutch.

Re: transmission overdrive slip/chatter

So, after a fluid/filter change and a bottle of lucus, it's still doing it.

More specifically, it's not necessarily doing it just in overdrive though. It seems to do it when it get over 50-55+ mph. Even if it's not actually in overdrive. Below that, I can give it as much gas as I want, and it doesn't make a sound. But it's doing it more, now that the temperature dropped again. When it was around 45-50 degrees the other day, it wasn't terrible, but was still there. Now, when it's 20 degrees out, it seems to do it even when I'm cruising at a constant speed over 55.

I'm guessing it's the torque converter, but is there anything else I could change/check before going that route. Reason being, the torque converter is above my comfort level for working on this stuff.

Re: transmission overdrive slip/chatter

Did you already select overdrive off with the switch on the shift lever and see what it does? It will go until 3rd gear and then apply the torque converter clutch. Does it give the same feeling of slipping?

Re: transmission overdrive slip/chatter

When you changed the fluid/filters, was there any black residue in the pan or any metal on the magnet (besides some very fine dustlike particles)

Re: transmission overdrive slip/chatter

You talk about making a sound. What kind of sound is it? Maybe can make a sound clip and post it here.

Re: transmission overdrive slip/chatter

update on situation

Like I mentioned above, after the fluid change, I had more problems then originally stated. After pulling the tranny and checking the pan, it looks like the clutch was going cause I had gravel looking pieces laying in the pan. No metal parts, just that grit. It wasn't there on original fluid change, just that copper looking dust.

So after throwing a new tranny in (junk yard tranny with 100k miles on it), I'm back up and running with a stable enough transmission. Although, even with a different transmission, I'm still having that noise and feeling of a hesitation over 50 mph.

Now, I'm moving my focus to the diffs. I flushed the front last year and filled with royal purple after changing the cv shafts. Boot was torn and started having the cv clicking when turning, so took care of that. But the 4wd/quadradrive has never worked right since on the driver left. Whenever losing traction in the rear, the front kicks in, but the driver left sounds like it's slipping/popping. I'm wondering if this is related to the problem I'm having now. I didn't add any additive because I've read that the royal purple has enough already in it. If the limited slip isn't working right in the diff, I'm wondering if it's possible to cause this slippage I'm hearing above 50 mph?

Re: transmission overdrive slip/chatter

Also, as far as a sound clip, the road noise and exhaust is louder than the mic can pick up. I can hear it, but a mic isn't able to catch it over all the noise.
