Trouble codes and random shut off

My girlfriend has a 2003 grand cherokee with a 4.0 engine. Lately shes had a problem with below the vehicles average gas mileage its usually around 17-19 and now its sitting at 13.7 and shes had the engine randomly shut off in her while driving once. She bought this jeep from her dad and he has had the random shut off issue happen to him twice.

I decided to pull the codea and found P0112 IAT Sensor 1 circut, some evap crap, and that SKIM BUSS code that seems to commonly pop up in these jeeps.

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the IAT sensor code and if the others are of any importance, this jeep doesnt have to pass emissions so I'm not worried about the evap system unless it can cause some other issues. We havent smelled any gas while in the jeep nore have I while under the hood or anywhere around the jeep so that leads me to belive that the evap problem is probably very minor, the gas cap is always kept tight. As for the SKIM BUS code I believe that one is related to the radio? If it is we do have an aftermarket radio, coukd this effect the vehicle in anyway?.

The most important issue here is the fact that the jeep has randomly shut off on her, if that happens while shes in major traffic then aomeone could get badly hurt. I've heard that a screw in the cpu behind the coolant reservoir may have something to do with this or the crankcase sensor.

Any ideas or proven solutions?

Thanks for reading

Re: Trouble codes and random shut off

Welcome to the garage.
The P0112 code could be due to a failed IAC sensor or open/shorted wiring to the sensor. I would start measuring the wiring and if found ok, change the sensor. This faulty inlet temperature sensor info will lead to the higher fuel consumption.
Regarding the random shut off, have a look at the wire bundle which runs behind the cylinder head, it can rest against a stud and wear the wire isolation through, causing random shorts.
If ok, i would change the crank position sensor.
Indeed the screws from some PCM´s can be too long, causing an internal short in the PCM.

Re: Trouble codes and random shut off

Ok, thank you for the advice.

I'll check those wires. I sure hope its not those pcm screws, i just tried to take them out and most of them were already stripped, i guess my girlfriends dad may have tried to to take them out when he owned the vehicle. I can see why he stripped the screws, theyre all star heads and are way to difficult to get to. I had to cut some plastic to get to them.

Thanks for the help

Re: Trouble codes and random shut off

Well those wires all look ok. Ive started to replace the crank sensor. Ive been trying to get to it from under the jeep. So far ive removed the bolt from the sensor but there seems to be no way to take the sensor itself out let alone put back in the new one. I'm currently trying to drop the front driveshaft to give me some extra room but even that is rusted in place, the pins wont come out even after a bath in PB Blaster and a good beating with a rubber mallet.

Ive heard of it being possible to get to the sensor by removing some things under the hood but even then it seems like I'm gonna be diving into an increasingly smaller space and smaller space.

Any advice?

Re: Trouble codes and random shut off

Ive considered the method of accessing the sensor via under the dash but I'd like to avoid that. It seems like every time you take apart a dash on a vehicle 2000 and up i end up encountering at least 15 eletrical connections in which many lead to nothing. Im really not even exaggerating there. Lol, this is why i strongly perfer vehicles from the year 1990 and back.

Jeepme made a nice writeup on the crank sensor change for the 4.0, see here: How To: Replace Crankshaft Position Sensor
