Angry Used 2000 WJ Electrical Gremlins

Hello first here I was refered here by Anandtech. I Posted there about my problems with my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
Back story:
I purchased the car in October 2012 and the previous owner had a remote starter that was removed improperly (I don't even know where the rest of the device is) and if the car is left about a week it will not start and in about 10 days the battery is totally dead (No door lights not even a click when I turn the key)
I noticed that there is an after market switch with a spliced wire in one of the harnesses under the hood and I was wondering I should just cut the switch out of the loop and return the harness back to normal

I am only asking this because obviously I don't want to make the problem worse plus I don't know what the harness is for

Here are some pictures of the harness and the switch

The wire that was cut into is a brown wire and the thin purple wire in the upper right corner is the one that goes to the switch (The other pole of the switch is attached to a chassis ground)



Here is the switch I was talking about if the switch if in the "OFF" position the battery does still go dead just not as fast as when it is in the "ON" position

Welcome to the garage.
I can have a look tonight on my jeep to see if i have this same wire and where its going to. Is there a connector close to where the brown wire is spliced, its not easy to see.
I would remove the negative battery connector and measure the current which is running with ignition switch in off. Then remove one at a time the fuses in the power distribution center under the hood and measure each time the current. If you see a large reduction in current after removing one fuse, you know that the problem is in that circuit.
Let me know which fuse reduces the current a lot (when i'm not wrong max 50 mA is ok, because of the feeding of the memory functions of the several modules), then i can see which components are in that circuit.

Yes there is a connector a couple of inches away from the wire splice
I have no idea what that harness is for though
Also what kind of tool do you use to measure DC current? I do have a Digital Multi-Meter (DMM) but that only goes up to 10Amps also I have to test the circuit in series with the DMM.

Just checked it on my jeep and the wire in your picture is the negative wire going from ignition coil #3 to the PCM. The PCM alternates this wire to ground for the coil to create the high voltage for the spark. The green/yellow wire is the power feed to the coil. Attached the wiring diagram for your reference.
Strange that the negative wire has a switch to ground. It will bypass the PCM and stop that cylinder from firing. A kind of a security system????
The other connector just to the right of the coil is connected to the left bank capacitor.
Regarding measuring the current, you are looking for some component which is taking power with the ignition in off. This will not be a high current, so the max 10 Amp setting from a DMM is already a good start, but you will probably measure something from 300-500 mA or in that range. You indeed will put the DMM in series with the circuit, so one probe on the negative battery pole and the other on the negative battery cable clamp.

The wire that is spliced is actually brown. OK I will try the tests tomorrow do I also pull the relays?

Here is a page I found describing all of the fuses and relays
So should I just properly splice the brown wire back together?
Anyway I will do the tests tomorrow I just need to know if I should also pull the relays

For the spliced wire the manual mentiones the colour TN/OR, which should be Tan/Orange (i think a kind of brown with an orange stripe). I think that you could just remove the splice, this one just cuts the isolation of the wire and makes contact with the other wire which is inserted. Just remove it and put isolation tape over the spot where the isolation was cut.
But i would first start measuring, just to see if this splice has anything to do with the battery drain. Very strange this wire with the switch.
You donīt have to remove the relays while measuring for now, by removing each fuse one by one you should be able to deenergize each circuit.
By the way, do you see that the engine runs different (rough) with the switch in on position?

I did not even notice the switch until triple a "AAA" said hey whats this it was on and I noticed that the engine likes to stall when put in gear and at a stop light but when off it seems to run ok

I had a similar problem with my 1999 GC Ltd flattening the battery in the space of a couple of days. Spent ages looking for an electrical fault but never found one. Even went as far as data logging a clamp meter over a period of time to get a trend of the discharge!!

However, the problem is now cured simply because there never was an actual fault other than a worn ignition switch. The ignition key should only be able to be removed in the 'Off' position. But with wear the key can be turned back one more click to the 'Accessory' position and then removed. Up to 10 Amps is drawn when the key is removed in this position so it was no wonder the battery was going flat.

Simple test to see if yours is being removed in the accessory position, does the radio or the wipers still work with the key removed? If it does you have turned the key back one position too far.

I think you may be onto something as my key cylinder is very worn out and they key will be able to be removed in any position
I also noticed the car will start and run but the radio (OEM Infinity) & Other things that require key on will not work until I giggle the key around

Just ensure that when you turn the engine off the key is not turned all the way back. If you look at the trim around the ignition barrel you will see a mark that shows the 'Off' position.

OK so I took the Jeep to a friend of a friend who knows a mechanic
and they finally found the problem

I probably should of mentioned that the horn and anything on the steering wheel did not work (Horn, Cruise Control, The radio buttons)

So the problem was that the wire harness for all of that stuff was totally mangled and was shorting out just enough to drain the battery and not blow a fuse (I don't know how the car did not catch on fire with a bad short like that but I am glad it didn't). The mechanic had to order the harness from the dealer
They also installed another new battery as the one I bought in October of 2012 was dead and would not hold a charge anymore

I will update this thread once I get the car back (Sometime next week) and hopefully the problem is solved.
