Vari-Lok Axles?

I bought a used 04 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.7L with 122,000 miles on it. Doing some on-line research I have determined that I should have the NV247 Quadra-Trac II transfer case and it should have the vari-lok front axle as standard equipment but how do I determine if it has the vari-lok rear axle? I want to change all the drivetrain fluids over to Amsoil and I need to know which axles I have for the correct weight gear lube. Thanks in advance for any help.

I think I goofed when I said I should have the front vari-lok axle as they appear to only be available with the quadra-drive system not the quadra-trac system so I should be able to use 80W90 gear lube in stead of the 75W140. If I call my local Jeep dealer and give him the VIN can he tell me if I would have the vari-lok rear?

I might be parting my wj out if i dont find a motor in the next coupel days and it has the quadra drive system....varilock diffs front and rear... 121k

Rockauto has brand new 4.7L long blocks for approx 2K.

Lift it up into the air and spin one of the tires by hand for a few revolution if it locks up eventually so that both rotate the same direction you have a varilock diff. If the tires stay rotating opposite directions the whole time then you have an open diff. Mine has selec trac, a D44 rear axle with varilock diff and a D30 front with an open diff.

Go to the above link and read about the different drive systems and fluids required. Your VIN does give the dealer the information he needs to help you secure all the right products. Changing to Amsoil products might be OK, but the stuff the dealer has is the recommnded goods. Let us know which way you go and what products you used. There may be others interested in changing over.

If you have quadra-trac II then you have a standard front axle. Regular 75w-90 or 80W-90 gear oil will work just fine in it. Only Quadra-drive comes with both locking axles. Do the test terminator2 posted to check if you have the rear locker. If so get some friction modifier from the dealer, but you can buy the oil anywhere, usually cheaper. I think you can still use the 80w-90 for normal applications, 75w-140 for heavy hauling or towing.

Also, if you want to change the fluid in the tcase make sure to get the special nv247 fluid from the dealer, atf+4 will not work in these gear boxes.

Sorry for bringing up an old post but I just got a 1999 wj with the quadra drive. The jeep dealer told me that I didn't need the friction modifier in the front, rear only and he even asked a tech who told him the same thing. My mechanic said he thinks I neede it but when he looked at his computer it wasn't needed. I just drove it home and it seems ok. I had him change the fluid with Mopar synthetic 75w 140.

Everything that I read stated that I need 2.5oz of friction modifier, but I didn't hear/feel any sound or chatter while driving home. Do I need to do a full circle in order to feel/hear the chatter?

Do I essentially have an open front diff without the modifier or am I causing undue wear/damage just driving it normally?

It's confusion to me now because the jeep parts dealer was saying that I didn't need it and now my mechanic is saying the same.

If your jeep has Quadra Drive, it has the Vari-Loc in both axles. When you donīt put the limited slip additive in the fluid, you will see the result when making sharp turns. The speed difference between the inner and the outer wheel will lock the Vari-loc (and make both front wheels connected together) and one or both wheels will have to slip, so that they both have the same speed. The additive will allow a bit of slip in the Vari-Loc, enough to make sharp turns without the wheel slip.

Thanks Frango...this has been bothering me all day....so I decided to call another jeep dealership and talk to the parts guy and he also says that I do not have vari loc in the front differential, he said for the 98 and 99 they only had vari loc in the rear diff.

I know that I have two stickers one the shifter that says Quadra Drive and one in the rear tail gate. I have not driven very much but so far it seems to be fine going around corners in normal driving situations. I did try this morning to make a u turn near the neighborhood and it seemed to be fine too....would it be because its mostly in rear wheel drive until there is slip in the rear before the front is even engaged?

Both dealerships took down my last 8 digit VIN code and had both said the same thing, no need for FM on the front diff...and my mechanic said the same thing so it there some misprinting somewhere?

What harm will it be if I do add half a bottle of FM in the front diff without vari loc, just wasting it?

The vari-Loc in the diff reacts to speed differences of the 2 wheels on that axle, so even if no torque is transferred to the front.
I never have heard of Quadra Drive with an open front diff. If there is only a rear diff Vari-Loc, it seems to be a tow package option.
But as Terminator mentioned, when you want to be sure if there is a vari_loc in the front diff, jack up both front wheels and turn one side. With an open diff the other wheel will turn into the opposite direction. When it has a Vari-Loc, it will start turning opposite, but quite soon both wheels will turn into the same direction (as soon as the Vari-Loc is locked)
Adding the FM to an open Diff will not harm anything, maybe only your wallet.

Well, I got my build sheet from Chrysler and it says vari-lok front and back. Question I have is why have I not heard any chatter or felt anything going around corners, I'm driving normally. I'm guessing it may be the tires are chattering without me knowing. I just can't get the FM in for a few more days. I guess I'll try to be more easy around the corners. So what harm am I doing by still driving it? Odd tire wear, stress on the diff or the components inside, will it be a lot of harm driving it as is for a few hundred miles?

What I find confusing is that 2 dealerships and my SAE mechanic with his computer said the exact same thing, no need to put FM on the front! Is it really that cryptic for non enthusiast to know the right info on all the different types? It's got 174k and was the previous owner who took it to the dealership and then a private garage told the same think all along?
