Water pump leakage

Today during a routine inspection, i found a minor cooling liquid leak coming from the waterpump. It doesn´t come from the pump shaft, but from a point where the pump is bolted to the engine case. Is there a seal that can be replaced, or is it, with the existing milage (134.000 Km), better to replace the whole pump?

Re: Water pump leakage

Personally...considering the work involved and the cost of a new pump, I'd replace it. I don't think there is a gasket where you're talking...is there a small weep-hole under the pulley area? I have not had the "pleasure" of doing mine...although I did do one on my I-6 XJ.

Re: Water pump leakage

Its all dry near to the pulley, its really the flange where it comes from. There should be some kind of seal or packing in between the pump housing flange and the engine side.

Re: Water pump leakage

I had a chance to look a little more closely...you're right...there is a gasket there. Personally, if you can afford it and intend to keep the Jeep for awhile, with that mileage, I would still replace. They appear to go for $60-$100 here in the states. In theory though, you should be able to unbolt, clean mating surfaces and install or make a new gasket.

Re: Water pump leakage

If you can get a pump for under $100 I would just take it off and check it if it looks ok and spins free....do ya feel lucky...do ya think it's worth a hunnit bucks not to have to do this again in a couple of months...if it is leaking at a block flange it's a paper gasket leaking most likely, the pump should be good for another 75-100,000 klm. However...Murphy's Law dictates as soon as you fill it with new antifreeze it will start leaking out the hole under the pulley shaft indicating the seal is now shot.

Re: Water pump leakage

Looking around on several sites i saw that there is a kind of rubber gasket. But removed the serpentine belt today and also found some radial play on the pulley, so its better to look for a new pump. I saw them aftermarket for under 50 USD, but prefer to keep it with Mopar.

Hey Frank, your pump is toast, the water you saw at the flange was prob. blown back by the fan check the weep hole again. With radial play on the shaft, the bearing and seal are shot...here a new mopar pump is $150. I would go with a rebuilt unit...just as good as oem IMO. (mopar pump with new bearing and seal) I would also flush the system well to remove any sludge before removing the old pump if possable...look for drain plugs on block near the oil pan. Bob.

Re: Water pump leakage

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply. Finding a new pump in Brazil is already not easy, a rebuild one is even worse. There are some guys doing import for car parts, but they are all on holidays now......................
They can get me one, second week of January, from AcDelco, 250 USD.
Will have a look in the meantime if i can find some supplier in the US who can deliver earlier. The leak is still not too bad, so can at least continue using the car.

You are correct it will last awhile still, but leak. check autozone or summitt in the US import the part yourself... give the system a good flush, you can get a kit that taps into heater hoses and attatch a water hose flush to clean out any mud/rust in the rad and block...do you use antifreeze in brazil?

Re: Water pump leakage

Yeh, eventhough the temperatures don't pass below the 10 C, we still use antifreeze, just for the corrosion inhibiters and whatever is in there for the system to work right. I will have a look at both shops you've mentioned, but the problem is normally that it takes more then a month to arrive.....................

Re: Water pump leakage

Frank If you can track down a Cardone Select pump. It's a much better pump than the original in that it uses a metal impeller instead of the oe plastic design. They retail for about $70 here. The pump is a piece of cake to remove. You don't even have to pull a hose. I love these modular engines. No shroud removal or anything. About less than hour start to finish. The hardest thing was finding enough clearance to get it between the shroud and engine.I pulled the alt because i got tired of of trying to find the right combination.Came right out where the alt was.Just remember to use the bleeder on refill
