what should i do?

hey guys, my malfunction indicator light went on. in the manual it says that this could be for a variety of things, one thing is "poor fuel quality." i just recently started using 89 octane instead of 87. and i also just drove a 500 mile round trip in the past 5 days. do you think that either of those two things would be behind why this light went on? all help will be appreciated because i don't want to have to bring my car to the dealer for the third time in a month.

if you have any other questions, i'll try to answer them as best as i can.

thanks guys.

Re: what should i do?

I don't see how putting some 89 in would make it turn that light on...and a car is meant to be driven, so driving 500 miles can't do it either....is it the check engine light?

Perhaps go to an Advance and use their code reader, and see what it says....if its something small...you could reset it and the light should turn off...

Re: what should i do?

Have you checked the gas cap?

On most new cars, if it isn't tightened properly the engine light can come on - I'm not sure if its the same with Jeeps but I'd guess so considering the amount of computers and sensors in there!

If it is tight, just go to a garage/store that can read error codes.

Also check the rubber seal on the gas cap carefully.,It could be tightened good and still give off a code due to cracking (This happened on my Saturn)

Re: what should i do?

do the key dance (on (not start)-off-on-off-on) then check the codes on WJjeeps.com

Re: what should i do?

This is from the WK FSM, but it might point you in the right direction.

Sounds like it could be a wiring issue. However it also says that if you get this code, you'd be in limp mode.

Re: what should i do?

i think i'm going to bring it to jeep. i've been there twice in the past months for problems with the truck and the second time i brought it there was to fix something they "fixed" the first time around so this time they're really gonna hear it from me.

Re: what should i do?

have you thought about just replacing the TPS? its like a 90$ from the dealer, 10 minutes to replace.

Re: what should i do?

you could check the sensor and make sure its completely seated in its position. You could also make sure its not dirty etc.

Re: what should i do?

well yesterday i was with a couple of my buddies working on a friend's wrangler and one of the guys used to work at jeep. he said most likely the light is on because the gas cap wasn't tight enough. so i have to wait an entire cycle for it to go off, or, i have to just reset the battery. i'll probably do that and if the light comes back on after another cycle of driving i'll have it checked out.

Re: what should i do?

If you got code P0121 after doing the "key dance", that has nothing to do with your gas cap being loose.

You can try disconnecting your battery for 10 minutes to see if it will reset, but if not I'd start out by making sure all of your connections for the TPS are clean and tight as Scott suggested.
