Whining/Droning noise

Hello folks,

I wonder if any of you good people could perhaps shed a bit of light on this noise I've got please, I realise it will only be speculation at the moment but I may find out more after having the front and rear diff oils changed next week and also the transfer box oil as a process of elimination. I have a Year 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.0 Limited (Petrol) with just over 64,000 genuine miles on the clock, between 60-70 MPH I get a whining noise but only when it's not under load, for example if I ease off the throttle the noise is there until I gently put my foot back on the throttle then it'll disappear.....until I ease off the pedal again then it comes back! It's as if i'm taking up some slack in the drivetrain somewhere when I put my foot back on the pedal!?! It's only apparent between the speeds stated and is fine below 60MPH or above 70 MPH, not that I normally drive above 70 MPH in any car I've owned as a rule, it's purely in the interests of experimenting! I've only owned her for a few weeks and didn't get an awful lot of history or paperwork with her except previous M.O.T.s proving the mileage is genuine, thanks everyone!

Re: Whining/Droning noise

Possible:
Wheel bearing
Universal/CV joint
Pinion bearing

Can you feel a vibration or do you only hear the noise?

Hi Governor, Thank you! There's no vibration, just the noise.

I would look at the wheel bearings , when mine went bad on a similar vehicle it had a whining to it and could change in pitch depending on conditions....but wheel bearings is a high suspect to me

+1. First place I would look. Also least likely to cause a vibration unless they get worn slap out.

Re: Whining/Droning noise

Thank You both! I will ask the Jeep bloke to check all 4 corners out then while he's got her up on the lift to change the oils, he's an independent Jeep specialist and I haven't used him before but by all accounts he's pretty good and a little cheaper than the main dealer labour cost but he does use genuine parts most of the time and very thorough i'm told, I will attempt a lot of things myself but where the diff and transfer case oils are concerned I thought it best to let him put her on the lift so she's nice and level.....just waiting for him to return from holiday at the end of this week, thanks again guys!

Re: Whining/Droning noise

The way it's being described as hearing it when it's not under load... this sounds like nothing more than normal differential whine. That's not a cause for concern.

Hi, Thank you!

While doing my research before buying a Jeep I did hear a fair bit and read what people had written about the fact that it's just a part of owning a Jeep, (Especially an older one) they do make all sorts of noises! .
You never know just changing the oils may make all the difference! What you say is very reassuring anyway, thanks! .

Re: Whining/Droning noise

I would also expect a pinion bearing, in particular the front pinion bearing (due to the noise when coasting and not under load).
It could also be from one of the front prop shaft joints (C/V or U-joint). You can experiment and remove the front prop shaft and see if the noise will be gone.

Re: Whining/Droning noise

Thank You Frank, great suggestion, I think that is something I will certainly try if the oil changes don't have any effect,

LOL... it's not just peculiar to Jeep. Even my 08 Honda Accord does it.
